View Full Version : Rocky Mountain DSM HP Competition (UPDATE)

DlandryTSI
01-11-2004, 05:17 PM
Ok guys here is an update. This is also going out to those that have e-mailed me showing interest.

So far we have 17 people showing interest and 7 have paid.

If you do that math here is where the money currently stands:

Entry Fee $65

Mac Autosport gets $45 of that. The rest is prize money.

If you figure we have 7 paid that is $455. Take MAC's money out and we have $140 left for prize money. This means as of right now the first place prize is roughly $45 and none for second place.

I hate to say this but if we do not have 15 PAID and registered by the 23rd of January, I will have no choice but to cancel this event. If this event is canceled your money will be refunded if you have paid.

If you are going to pay cash the day of the event you must e-mail me. You will be accountable for showing up.

If you have any questions or concers please let me know.

Scott I can't wait to meet you this time after my no-show at Mamacitas. Glad to see the ThreeSpeed Scattershiled on that car. I've got one myself. I got HKS 272s going in this weekend with an eprom ECU (9000 rpm rev limit and keydiver mods) going in as soon as it arrives. Plus a snazzy new stainless steel heat shield you'll all be jealous of : D haha

Don't know if i'll be putting up top numbers without the nitrous (i'm not ready to spray yet) but it should be lots of fun regardless

I can't compete in this HP competition due to circumstances also.

AKA piston screwup on Ross' behalf.

Oh well. I guess there's always next year.

How about opening the compitition up for other
awd vehicles? scoobies?
Just a thought

Then I'd have to learn about their airflow characteristics which I don't have time to do right now. Maybe for the next one :)

We would need to have extra classes... an I6 with a T88 is almost always going to beat a DSM with a FP3065, what would be the point of competing if you're going to loose every single time without a chance?

scooter
01-13-2004, 12:17 AM
I had said awd for that fact. (but I would take my chances against
an I6 with a T-88) You couldn't open it up for everybody or you
would have mustangs, corvettes, hummers. (you get the idea)
I drive a DSM for the fun of it! This horsepower comp is for fun
also!
Buckup fellow dsmer's, call your friend, call your pal, get the word
out and lets have some fun!
I know I can get some cars from the ft. collins area. I heard
there are some quick dsms in Longmont. How about up there
in boulder. Where is Faatz? he has a fast car.
All in all who cares if you roll on the dyno and don't have enough
power to turn the rollers, You were there! Dave and many others
have put in a lot of work getting this set up, Lets not let that go to waste.
Who needs prize money? Lets have fun!

Thanks, Scot

chrisgvr4
01-13-2004, 05:52 AM
Faatz's car is down waiting the new engine put in. I saw him last night when I picked up my 272s. Is Mike Thompson coming? He has a 50trim and is near me. Keith is already coming. I'll talk to my friend with the EVO and see if he's game.

would love to come down and spectate, see what kinda cars I'll be runnin with at the track....would that be cool or no?..might be able to pitch twords prize money...or bring a 12pk of pop or somethin....

Is that ok if i bring that one. i wont be able to go to ohio for about two more weeks to get my car so the talon will have to sit this one out. i will post the results from buschurs dyno and from MAC's dyno when i get the car. damn dave i was hoping i could take you on. Sorry steve, I didn't mean anything by the comment about
time. Its never fun waiting for parts much less your car.
buschur is one of the best in the country. Great thing for
you, because your car will most likely be the fastest in colorado.
Talk about time, I got in such a hurry I ended up with more
broken parts. Now I'm the one waiting for parts. Might cost
me from bringing my talon. But I will attend even in my galant.

Good luck to all

well scooter. its ok. my goal was to be the fastest dsm in colorado at bandimere. buschur has had my car for 3 and half months. john shepard rebuilt my tranny and im hoping good things with this turbo/engine. i hit 360awhp with a big 16g in washingotn dc last year so man i hope everything goes well. if im not the fastest or most powerful i guess ill have something to work for next year. but as of now i dont have a nitrous set up. so that could be in the works over next winter. so im hoping the big turbo will be enough. but this is my daily driver, so this car will be more than enough im sure. buschur stage 3 and a 60-1. wheeeuuw. its gonna be scary. ill cross my fingers and will keep everyone posted. i am calling buschur tomorrow. they have had the fuel pump for three days now. my car needs to be done. i gotta take some of you ol boys out. hehe.

Bret Rau and Shepard have both raced at Bandimere... I would suspect they hold the title of fastest DSMs at Bandimere.

And shit Hal, you know I've got a ghetto engine bay...

chrisgvr4

v413nc3
01-23-2004, 03:20 PM
the competition is still a go until the day of the comp, if we don't get the numbers that Dave needs ON that day we'll have to cancel.

Oh, and Rau and Shep are considered the QUICKEST not the fastest tyvm :) And I can promise I'll be crowned in the fastest category...

Oh, and I believe Sheps run was a 9.02 not a 9.20 but I could be mistaken.

In the event of a tie for the title of "Rattiest" engine bay, the tie breakers will be:

Rattiest Interior

followed in order by

- most soot on rear bumper
- most oil in valve cover

If after that, there is still a tie, we'll cut it in half!

Ok we are going to go with this event. However it looks like we only have enough cash for 1st place only prizes. However I might be able to get MAC to throw in a few T-shirts or something to that nature. Here is how things are going to work. On Friday evening I will start printing out tech sheets with your name and vehicle on it. That sheet will also have your run number on it. That number is the order you will run. I'm going to try to keep the car types together that way we only have to adjust the wheelbase a few times.

At 9:30 we will have a drivers meeting just to go over how things will work. If you do not wish to drive your car on the dyno you can let me drive it or the guys at MAC. I think I've done 30 pulls on that thing myself. However I will not drive the heavilly modded cars. Then I'll just want to mod mine even further hehehehe.

Ok back on the subject. Spectators: You may invite some people to watch but please be generous on how many people you bring. I'll be bringing a couple cones to mark where people can stand. Spectators must stand atleast 15' away from the front of the car and 10' from the sides. No spectators will be allowed over by the computer area or on that side of the dyno.

Also granted your vehicle is strapped down it can still move on the rollers. Please come to this event sober :).

I will be out of town mon-fri this coming week. If you have any questions or concers I might not be able to get to them till friday night.

Plan on showing up at the dyno at 9:00AM. Do whatever prep you need to do. Bring your own tools, gloves, rags whatever.

I have a feeling this will be a great turnout and if all is successfull and MAC is happy with how things go we will hold another event like this in the fall.

On those notes everyone go out and do that last minute tuning :). See you all Saturday Morning.

I plan on going to this but I haven't payed Dave yet and I think he is out of town, Should I just pay on Saturday or should I paypal Dave the money?

I installed my FRH intake and got the car pretty well tuned for 21psi and pump gas, decided to drive it to Denver yesterday for a promotion meeting and I ended up getting stuck in the snowstorm on the way back, boy did that suck in my car the way it's setup, took 2hrs to get to Lafayette. Anyways I dont know if I'll have time to install the HKS 272s so I might just have to Dyno the car without them. :(

I must have missed it...what exactly is your car built for then? highway beast? I assume not autocross with that big of turbo and setup...just suprises me I guess...just curious...I was really interested to see what kind of runs you could make but I guess I wont see that beast at the track...

v413nc3
01-27-2004, 05:26 PM
You'll have plenty of a chance to see it at the track, just not a drag strip. It's built for road racing... A common misconception with this turbo is that it spools slow. Many people on a 2.0l have seen extreme power start building quickly with it, and I run a 2.3.

For instance.

At idle (750RPM) I have -1psi vac (4-6in/hg)
At 1800 (still no load) the MAP sensor shows 1.5psi boost, the boost gauge shows about 1psi.

She doesn't generate more than that without load, but she spools EXTREMELY fast. When I shut the car off you can hear it spin down for a good 35-40 seconds.

When I reve the car from under the hood I can FEEL the filter sucking in air, and I can hear the turbo sucking it in. Trust me, it may be rated at 65lb/min but it spools FAST.

ryanman
01-27-2004, 05:36 PM
You wouldn't even run it one time for us down the track? Just drive it like Hal drives his car. I'll give you $20 bucks. Anyone else wanna pitch in? lol:D

hmm, I used to hear that at the airport when the jets wound down  ...lol...all I can say is wow....I have not heard very many hands on opinions of the 65, if you speak that way of that turbo I feel much more confident on my choice of the 52...I was somewhat worried about spool at this altitude....obviously thats not an issue if your setup is right and decently tuned....I have heard that both spool VERY quicky for the size and flow of them at sealevel....I'm impressed you plan on using your setup in an autocross car...kinda opens my eyes in a way.. ....anyway only got one thing left to say...

Snow or sunshine we'll be still having this event. Last time I checked the dyno was indoors

--Dave

Hal
01-28-2004, 08:27 AM
Since you only get TWO pulls, a little advance work can help make sure you get the best possible numbers:

1) If you are putting higher octane fuel in, RESET the ecu (TMO/DsmLink excluded) and go do a few pulls to get the learned octane setting dialed in

2) Make sure your boost controller is working properly, if you're spiking and have to get out of the gas you won't be happy with the results of your pulls

3) Make sure your spark plugs are properly gapped, better yet get a set of new ones in the APPROPRIATE heat range for your level of boost/n2o

4) Make sure your spark plug wires are properly routed. This reduces the chance of arcing and inductive misfire at higher boost levels

5) For those on the bottle, make sure the bottle pressure is in the 900 - 1000 psi range. It's gonna be cold, so you need that bottle heater :)

6) For those in the "unlimited" class, ditch the intake piping and filter for your pull :)

7) DSMLink users, make sure your settings are saved. You never know when you might need to reload them (dead battery). It ALWAYS happens at the worst possible time.

Hey Dave, I just found out that I have the day off (done with war games), and will be finishing up the rest of the install of the parts, then hopefully Jake can tune the beast again :P
Anyhow, I hope all the slots aren't filled, I will be running the small turbo class. I will let you know and pay tonight if everything goes right. I apologize for the late notice, but the military had me working 12 days straight of 12's at all hours, so I didn't think I would get the chance to participate.
Lastly, any tips on MAFT install with dsmlink V2, and what was the final ruling on intercooler sprayers?
Thanks,

Hal
01-28-2004, 01:20 PM
I don't think you'll see much (if any) gain from a sprayer.

You are only there for two pulls, both in a single gear.

The fans in front of the car provide some airflow, but nearly what you would see on the street.

The forcasted high for saturday is in the 30's so the cars will be pretty "cold" already from sitting outside.

The area the dyno is in is heated. Plus the heat of the vehicles after a WOT pull will heat things up.

If it snows Saturday the latest you need to be at the dyno is 10am. If I see no snow falling Saturday then you will need to be there by 9:30am.

Also if you have sensitive ears you should bring some ear plugs. It will be loud in the bay.

Hey, this is Steve. I'm not going to be running the talon. I can't pick it up until next friday the 6th. I'll have it on the dyno the week after that. Anywho. I'm bringing a 95 GSX that i built. The mods are as follows ( Turbochargers.com small 16g, Hallman manual boost controller, Dejon tool hard intake, 1g bov, Dejon tool 1G BOV adapter, ongreenperformance.com intake filter and adapter, gutted cat, no muffler) oh and we push 16-18 PSI, and an ACT 2600 with a street disc. Thats it for modifications, oh and of course an autometer sport comp boost gauge.

I'm down here at Marni's parents. Car is cooling off while I run to Duggans to get some race gas. Then I need to pull the throttle body, put on the new gaskets, block of the FIAV and ISC and put it all back together. Then I'll tune tonight at as much boost as my profec will give me. I'm hoping for 27psi.

Jake I'm not going to make it to the dyno this afternoon, just don't have time. I'll have to tune on the street. And after seeing how fast my car was in a little roll on racing with Keith yesterday I hope i don't get any tickets.

chrisgvr4
01-30-2004, 10:01 PM
Well i couldn't get my FIAV off but I got new gaskets on the car and after a little scare the car is up and running again. Now I just need to get rid of the 1/4 tank of 91 and put in the 114.

BTW: For people with throttle body bolts instead of stock studs, make sure the gasket doesn't slip down before you get all the bolts in leaving 1/3 of the opening un gasketed. Ooooopppppppppps. It makes you have no vacuum and crappy idle. Go figure  '

See you all tomorrow!

I stopped by MAC for a few minutes.

Got to see Scooters car and his pulls.

VERY impressive.

A really nice guy and a very well done car!

... and no, I didn't run my car, it was never entered.

... as I type this, the competition is still going on.

It was great seeing people that I hadn't seen in a long time.

I hope every one there had a great time!

It looks like everyone had a great time.

Too bad Scooter popped the head gasket.

He had the field covered, even off the bottle.

He certainly was my choice to win it.

There were some well done cars there today, and best of luck to everyone at the track this year.

What finally happened? Blow a rad. hose? Head Gasket? I still can't figure out how to post a video, so I'm letting Dave do it. I'm sending him the videos as I type this, so they should be up in no time. Just to do it ahead of time, I want to apologize for the lack of quality of my videos. I don't have an actual digital video camera. All these were done with a digital camera on the .mpg mode. Not bad for a digital still though.

I got video on everyone up to and including the 60-1 powered EVO.

Headgasket.

I was watching from the area up front.

My first thought was the nitrous line came apart, but then I saw the spray from the head/block junction.

Hopefully there was no serious damage.

Ouch. Do you know if his head/block is o-ringed? If it was and that happened, man. Those are some serious cylinder pressures.

Pretty damn stout for a factory head gasket. I'm guessing that was the composite style? Not the Steel MLS?

Marcus

DlandryTSI
01-31-2004, 09:03 PM
They were using a felpro gasket which did not hold up to those pressures. So they will be going to a mitsu MLS setup this time.
A 2" piece was sitting on the dyno after the run.

thanks for the help guys. had a great day in parker. To bad about the head gasket. Tried a Fel-pro, didn't seem to work so good.

Ended up with one pissed off head gasket, Have never blown
out every cylinder, now I have. Engine looks great.
Putting back together, this time with a steel gasket.

Paul said he had a great time driving the car but felt terrible.
shit happens

Heh time to send that headgasket back to felpro for a refund ;-). Can't wait to see it run when its back together. I think you popped #3 on the first run judging buy the coolant spraying out the back.

--Dave

01-31-2004, 09:18 PM
Damn... That is impressive. Now we know that a fel-pro won't hold up long in super-high HP applications. I'm amazed it held up that long actually. Scott. I'm sorry it had to happen while it was on the dyno. Geeze that thing was impressive though.

Dave, I think your right, the piture on the coputer is clearer
than real life. You can actually see the burn mark.

That also explains the coolant/oil leak after the first run.

Where are the vids?

DlandryTSI
02-01-2004, 07:56 AM
On my first pull the log was perfect. Timing was dead on at 23 degrees @ 24psi with no knock. I think the first run was 382hp. As I went through everything trying to find something that needed to change I couldn't find anything. Walked over to the halman and turned it up to 30psi. The boost held till about 6k then dropped to 27  . But the car still showed 0 knock and timing at 23 degrees.

Some individuals were telling others I run leaded race gas (110). WRONG. The car was using 105 UNLEADED.

I might go back in feb and see if I can find any more power out of this current setup. Right now it sits at 401hp uncorrected 507hp corrected.

Can't wait till the track opens.
