I think you just hold the power button down when its on, and it turns on the green backlight for the screen.....

With the backlight on you will eat batteries. Make sure you Hotsync often.
I have recently found that Energizer makes some new (I don't remember the name) batteries that are a silver color and look al high-tech. They are made for small electronic devices and last a REALLY long time compared to other batteries I have used in my palm. They are a bit more expensive, but worth every penny in my opinion.

It should keep all of your data for like 20 seconds after you take the batteries out.
Mine, however, has a loose/broken/or burned out capacitor and looses everything on palm every time I take the batteries out. So, I now look for the best batteries around, because it takes about 20 minutes to re-load everything I have on my palm.
Hopefully yours will work!:p
