I run DSMLink but have been worried to do any real tuning untill I got a EGT gauge, but thanks to this forum, and finding out what my a/f ratios were (horrible, so bad that I don't want to share) I decided to hell with that. So what are acceptable knock counts? Right now I get .4 or a .7 every once in a while. It like a fluke reading. Which brings me to question two. what is a good knock threshold?

I ran a Pocketlogger on my '93 and I could get about 7-8 counts and still see 20+ degrees of advance but any more would start to hurt that number.

Remember this is a 2g. You can run under 1 degree of knock safely.

Below 7 counts (iirc) the 1g ecu does not retard timing.

On a DSMLink 2g, you are NOT seeing knock sum.

You are seeing TRUE timing retard.

As long as you are not running N2o, I wouldn't worry about knock levels below 1 full degree.

I agree on the 1* threshold. Try to keep it as low as possible.

All right that is actually quite helpful because of so many people talking about 43 counts or 23. I guess the way they are counted is different on the first and second generations?
Although one comment threw me off. If 1* is acceptable is it smart to set DSMLinks threshold to 1*? So this is in fact showing me the effects of knock on timing rather than actual knock? If so, then what is a good way to configure the knock table? I have a stock long block. No piston slap. Stock clearances on the reciprocating assembly. Although I think I have lifter tick(I'm not sure because the previous owner took it to Mile High Mitsu. and they said it was something to do with the charcoal canister(??)).

And since I really don't feel like starting a new thread...what A/F ratio do you guys run on the street and track? I planned on a 11.8-12.2 for the street. But I have no clue on the track for different octanes. I suppose I just want to get a broad sense of what people feel safe with on their set-up and car. And if my guesstimates are way off feel free to tell me.

First, you would be well served to read the DSMLink tuning guide.

One reason is the tuning theory it contains.

Another is the reference to various features and their names.

I assume by "knock table", you mean the timing adjustment table?

Understanding the "lingo" will help ensure that you get the answers to the questions you are really asking.

Sorry for the inconvenience. I moved to Korea three months ago and didn't bring that guide with me. Although I suppose I could print it again. And I hadn't worked with it enough to memorize the table names through interfacing the program. But point taken. I was refering to the "knock table" where you can set knock threshold, and what a sensible setting might be.
