View Full Version : Couple of Newbie questions...

I have a couple of questions.

First, recommendations for good import shops in Denver. I've gone to Racing Trenz a couple of times, and they have been friendly and helpful, but they are more geared towards Honda than DSM. They are also big on pushing Greddy, which seems to me to be more money for the same part much of the time.

Second, I'm running an Injen top pipe with a 1G BOV. I have not put in a boost controller yet (I know, I know), although I am running a real boost gauge. Amazingly boost is a consistent 15 psi, vacuum 15. I was told that the 1G BOV will not stand up to that much boost (Racing Trenz), but it seems that a lot of people love them. The BOV is not crushed...actually, I'm not even sure what that is...I'm sure it is in the forums somewhere, so I'll find it. What can a 1G BOV handle?

Third, I believe I read somewhere that the length of the intake -before the MAF- has an effect on the torque. Is there any truth to this? Does the length of piping in any part of the intake effect torque or horsepower? What is the best way to increase the torque on the Talon?

Any info. would be greatly appreciated. I would rather do this right than 3 times.

First, stay away from ALL of the Denver area import shops.

Second, read the archives.

a 1g bov will hold fine.... I run 18psi on a uncrushed 1g. My brothers crushed 1g bov holds 25psi then it blows open at anything above 25psi. With a stop leak kit it will hold even more.

Trenz are a bunch of no talent ass clowns, dont go there and stay as far away from them as possible. We will help you, and working on cars isnt rocket science.

At 15 psi I hope you have at least rewired your fuel pump.

A tried and true upgrade path can be found here http://www.buschurracing.com/upgrade.html

OK, so stay away from all Denver shops. That's too bad, it's always nice to have someplace to go.

I haven't rewired my fuel pump. But after that statement I will this weekend.

Thanks for the link, I'll check it out.

if you want the best work done to your car in the rockies you need to go to colo springs........ Jack's shop is hands down the best shop for dsm'rs.

and i have pushed my 14b to 23 psi on my 1g bov and it didnt leak...

i would get a fuel pump re-wire, then a boost controller, then a downipe... next well get a new turbo!!!!!

your t-25 is the size of my left nutt

Well...I think I know more about your anatomy than I ever needed.... :D But you're right, the T-25 is tiny.

I want to do the upgrade in one shot -turbo (16G), FMIC (Dejon Tools). I'm also interested in water injection. Pros/Cons?

Another question- Can anybody recommend any good books on DSm tuning?

You won't find any books on "DSM Tuning" but if you search around this site and ask questions we can give you help on what you need.

Thanks. It's frustrating, if you want to tune any V8 or a Honda, there are lots of books. DSM's are popular, why hasn't anyone ever put together something for those? I can't even find good articles in any of the magazines...maybe I should by a Civic....

there really cant be ONE book for tuning a dsm..... or any fuel injected car for that matter.... if there were i would have a new bible, but i search dsmtalk, and the Vfaq along with chatting with some dsm buddies and just trying new stuff out my self...... to each his own, but no single book will explain all the knoledge i have gained about my car which i have retianed from all sorts of people from around this counrty...... hehe i bet it would be a blast to read how turbo maps work or how tuning a car is actually done through AEM or link... i doubt those books explain anything more than a simple motor swap and bolt ons....

Yeah, that's true. I've always built V8s, so I'm trying to learn about these "half engines" (just joking). I understand the basics, but I read some of the forums on here and I'm just lost.

As far as greddy goes, their gauges arent a bad option. Especially if you ever concider getting DSMLink. The boost gauge is supported and loggable, and I think someone is working on getting the EGT loggable. They are a little more expensive, but after 2 years of having them they have given me no trouble unlike my autometer gauges.

*shrug* My autometer work flawlessly and are as accurate as I could hope, (based on readings from my AEM).

As far as the 1G BoV goes. It's more a question of how much it can evacuate, not how much it can hold. The point of your CBV (BoV) is to vent compressed air out of your intake area so that you don't suffer from compressor surge. The 1G BoV, and any other of the "small" BoV's are fine for any turbo that flows up to and around 44lb/min. Anything over that and you're pushing your luck. For a T25 and any of the 16G's you're fine with it. So I say stick with it.

As for running high boost on your T25, that's all you bud, I've seen bad things happen when they blow up.

I'm don't want to run high boost on my T-25, I've heard too many horror stories. Is 15 psi "high boost"? Also, I thought that 2Gs wouldn't boost that high without some type of controller anyway. Is mine uncommon?

15 is fine. And some do, some done, mine only went to 12psi. Doesn't matter I suppose, get a better turbo and you won't have worries :) Even a 14b is a lot better.

Thanks. I've got to ask this -What does "v413nc3" mean? I see you on several forums and I can't figure it out.

Just curious.

It's read "Valence". Do a search on valence shells.

Atoms? Quantum mechanics? Did I get the correct hit?

That would be correct.

OK. Not to get too far off of the thread...Do you work in this field, or just have an interest? "Electron Pair Repulsion" is not something common to use for a forum name.

Sorry, I was one of those kids that always asked "why?"

9 second racing in Bromfield is a good shop to go to. Ask for Kenny Hood.
He has done all of the work one my Galant VR-4. For the past 2 years. Including new motor, he also removed the balance shafts,as well as other mods.
