rear shock noise

I replaced struts and shocks on '91 gvr4. Now rear shocks clunk when I hit a bump. I torqued everything to spec so I need an idea of why it is clunking. Is the rubber pad in the trunk that the shock goes through the only thing attaching the shock to the car? What holds the rubber pad on to the car? Seems like it is just bouncing around with that setup. Maybe I am missing some part. Any ideas?

This rubber pad you're talking about....it kinda sounds like the bushing that goes on top of the shock between the shock and the car. If that's not it and I have no idea what you're talking about, my apologies.
