View Full Version : Wheel bearing?

I've got a whine coming from my right rear, but it's only really loud at 70-85 mph. Sometimes I can hear it around 45mph, but it's not nearly as loud. The whine changes in pitch the faster I go too, and it seems to be affected by bumps in the road.

I switched my RF and RR tire, but it's still doing it. I also got an alignment done, and that didn't help any. Anybody know if this is a wheel bearing or possibly something else?

Thanks!

Jack up the car so the wheel is up off the ground, and leave all the lugs on tight. Grab the tire on each side, see if you have any play. If there is some play probably a wheel bearing. I've had to replace 2 of them on my car and that was an easy way to tell, not to mention the annoying sound it makes when they are going bad.

If you have a bad wheel bearing, you need to find a new alignment shop. If that were bad or anything else bad in that area, they are supposed to tell you before they do an alignment.

Does the sound change when you turn right or left?

dont wheel bearings usually make a pulsing noise that pulses faster and faster the faster you go? never had a bearing go bad in my dsm, but in other cars it doesnt make a constant noise.

and i dont think that the alignment shop would have payed any attention to the rear, so im not surprised they didnt say anything.

I don't think it's a wheel bearing. If it was a wheel bearing, wouldn't it be loud no matter what speed I'm going?

I jacked up the rear end and checked for play, and there is none. I also checked the brakes to make sure a pad wasn't dragging.

Yes, the fluid is fresh and full..

My bad wheel bearing was only noticeable at higher speeds, or while cornering.

My wheel bearing failure was audible at lower speeds as well. Doesn't much matter though, he said that the tire didn't have any play when he tried to move it.

LOL. So now we are just waiting for his next thread that explains how his wheel fell of, or bearing caught on fire. Or that the noise suddenly went away.

I wasn't able to move my wheel at all either, but the bearing was still bad. I replaced it and the noise went away.
