View Full Version : What kind of gear oil in LSD 4Bolt?

I have never had experience with limited slip differentials and was wondering what kind of special gear oil, if any, is need for the LSD as opposed to the hypoid type or whatever type the non-LSD's are.
I was looking at Sta-lube 80W90 GL4 gear oil that says it is specifically made for LSD's, has anyone ever used it? The shit is expensive though, $5 a quart which is barely less than GL5 Amsoil synthetic I have used in the past.
What is my best course of action?

Correction, the StaLube is GL5+ just like the Amsoil

Being that it's a standard gear differential, get the GL-5 gear oil of any flavor that you want.
The viscous LSD in the rear diff is a self sealed unit. The gear oil selection has no effect on the LSD itself.
I use the Redline shockproof Heavyweight (red goo). No issues as of yet. This is with countless drag passes and hard acceleration jaunts since 2 years ago.

I have been running redline heavy weight in my tranny for 40K miles. It to thick for most people but the only thing that lets me into 2nd with out grinding.
I've been running it in my transfercase and rear diff for 10K miles at least.

Heavy weight is too thick for most peoples trannys.
Its ok in the rear diff and transfercase, light weight would be good in the tranny.

The rear diff is about .7-.8 quarts and the Xfer case is about .4-.6quarts.
The tranny holds more than 2.3quarts, it's more like 2.6-2.8.
I wouldn't use any pure synthetic GL5+ in the tranny, it is simply too slippery for the syncros to do their job. I use 1 quart of Penzoil Syncromesh which is speicially designed for yellow metals (like our brass syncros) and works wonders. The rest I use 75W90 Amsoil GL5+. I had trouble with 2nd gear with the new DSM and this combo works absolute wonders. I am conviced that at least a quarter of people with DSM shifting problems either have broken down or incorrect gear oil in the tranny.
Plain Jane Coastal 75W90 works very well too, but it breaks down much quicker and you must change it more often. It is rated at GL3, GL4, and GL5 and I have noticed that the tranny shifts much better with this than pure GL5+ oil like all the synthetics and top brands. The best I have found is still the Amsoil/Syncromesh combo but it is pricey in comparison, (A gallon of Coastal, about $8, is much cheaper than even a quart of Amsoil, about $10, and syncromesh is $7).
Just my $.02

Penzoil syncromesh is usually carried at Autozone, but Amsoil is harder to find. The only place I know of is Broadway Automotive in Boulder, but I live close by so I lucked out.
