Just got my 98 GSX today.......shifts fine but a lil' notchy......box feels very tight. Clutch feels good on normal take up.........but i tried to goose it in the wet today and when i got into 2nd it just revved up to 5k and slowly started to pull.
How hard is a clutch to do? Im fortunate enough to have my sister's boyfriend who is an ASE volvo tech (and WRX gearhead) who can help me.
Want something very streetable......that would have like a limit of 300whp.
Thanks!

ACT 2100 would be fine depending on how much abuse you want it to handle.
ACT 2600 will take repeated abuse and launches, but then you have the increased pedal pressure and pressure on the crank thrust bearings.
I got 40K miles out of my 2600, and I wasnt nice to it after the breakin :)

I suggest not doing it yourself. It isn't exactly hard but very time consuming. You must take out the halfshaft and make sure that everything is perfect. Ask your buddy to help you out, if not, take it somewhere to get it done. I would recommend a 2100. I have a 2600 in mine and if you only want 300whp, a 2100 should last a while.

Thanks.........i def. do not want any extra pressure on the crank bearings.
My sis's boyfriend works on god awful new Volvo's all day......he says working on japanese cars is almost like a vacation to him.
How much would a good shop car for labor? 300?

actually, probably more around 500 total. It depends on the shop. Just make srue to take it to a reputable shop if you decide to go that route.

How many hours is it? I assume if you say $500 job it's around 7-8hrs? Hopefully I can just bring it to his work (Mcdonald Volvo) on a saturday and knock it out.
Do you think an exedy stage 2 is too big? Its the same pressure as an act2100......so i think it would be an upgrade, but nothing too big.

depending on how fast the mechanic is, it is usually between 5-8 hours. somebody correct me if I'm wrong.
The exedy is a good clutch but personally, I would stick with an ACT. That is just my opinion though

I asked a guy who wholesales those clutches; Exedy is one of the largest clutch manufacturers

I asked a guy who wholesales those clutches; Exedy is one of the largest clutch manufacturers......and indeed does make parts for ACT, who paints, puts together, and packages kits. Sounds like either way you can't go wrong.
Thanks for your help.
Also.......any flywheel advise you can give me? I want to do this right the first time.

I have an Exedy Stage 2 w/ the thick disc against a Fidanza flywheel, once the car is running i'll give my $.0002 .

Sounds like a plan. When do you think you'll have it done?

I would recommend just going with a ACT 2600 set-up. That is what i had in my 2g and worked perfect for years. Good luck with your choice.

Nice. Let me know if you need a hand or anything. I'd really like to learn how to work on these cars.

I would stick with the ACT 2600 if you want a REALLY good clutch that is not going to go out quickly. The 2100 is decent but doesn't grab as hard or as well.
As for the flywheel, the fidanza flywheel is what I have, you can find one for about 200$ off of ebay. Brand new and a very good flywheel (only weighs 8 lbs)
gl with w/e you decide to do and let me know how it goes
