Anybody install the scatter shield with the motor and everything in the car?
I'm trying but it a pain in my butt.
It looks lke I'll have to pull the coolant tube from water pump off inorder to have enough clearence to get the thing in there. There just isnt enough clearence to get it between the shift linkage and water tube.
Of course the radiator drain valve breaks off when I tried to remove it, and now it leaks..... so the radiator has come out now

I didn't install it with the entire assembly intact as I ran into the same issues you did.
I waited until the next time I had the tranny off. MUCH easier.
This is on a 1g AWD BTW.

Hmm well that sucks.
I couldnt find any post anywhere about installing the scatter shield.
So this I what I found needs to be done so far.
Remove shift linkage.
Unbolt the tranny bolts.
Unbolt the starter gound wire.
Drain coolant.
Pull water pipe back so you can move it up out of the way.
The shield goes under the wires for the starter.
The starter ground wire bolts to the shield in the tapped hole.

Got the sheild on.
but there is a clearence issue between the water pipe and shield
Hard to see in the pictures, but the water pipe doesnt quite fit back enough so the mounting tab is not touching the block, and its a bit to high.
I was thinking of redrilling the hole and then shimming it out with washers. It is either that or I try to bend the small pipe around the shield.
Any suggestions?

Well the guys on DSMtuners said you have to grind away some of the shield to get it to clear. Either that or cut up the water pipe and figuer out how to make it work.
So I'm either going to grind a notch in the shield, or cut the pipe in half just past the mounting tab, and put a piece of radiator hose there.

if you do grind the shield make sure it's ok with drag rules if it's a required safety thing.

The only thing I have seen specified is the thickness on the shield.
The 2g shields come pre notched already to clear the waterpipe, but
I'd rather not remove any material just incase the flywheel does let loose.

Since you are keeping the car for street use your best bet is to grind away a small portion of the scatter shield.
When I installed mine I eliminated the stock water pump and converted to a electric water pump setup. However I was ditching the power steering anyway.

Man you have so much room in there, and its clean  ..... I'm jelous
Yeah I'm keeping it for street use, as a matter of fact I shall have the A/C working again after my new orings come in. :D
Well, I'll take a closer look at it tonight and decide what I'm going to do. I will finish this thing tonight!
Just modify the water pipe bracket.

That or bend the pipe. I ended up just tweaking the pipe a little in a vice to clear mine.
You really don't want to modify the pipe mount because of the o-ring seal at the water pump.
I wouldn't want to compromise the sealing ablilities of that o-ring due to being slightly cockeyed. They leak easy enough.

Now to fix the coolant leak that is making a mess of the engine in my pictures. The tranny leak will stay for now. :D
