The other night I was just driving down the highway when I started hearing grinding noises from under the car, I took it out of gear and started to slow down. I tried to put it back in gently but it wouldn't go it. So I stopped the car after coasting to a stop and decide to see if anything if really wrong. It then would go into gear fine. I try to gently roll forward and it goes for about a foot and then violently jerks to a halt. It will also do this in reverse. If I put it into neutral it will roll fine but does make weird noises like something is getting caught. I do know that my driver front axle is shot, would this cause all of this? Does anyone have any other ideas. It is currently at the walmart in longmont and I have to try to get it figured out real soon. It is a built tranny from Jack with a 4 spider also.

sounds like a transfer case problem

did any of the wheels lock? Or turn and then lock, turn, lock ect? if so i would say it was the transfer case. Depending on how fast you were going it may have done some damage to the transmission as well, if it was indeed the transfer case.

Good luck with that, my transfer case broke, seized and broke some of my trasmission parts. It was time for a new gear box...

The symptoms sound similar to my car when the center diff. blew up.

At first there was a noticable grinding noise. Then it just gave way. Luckily I was only going 30mph and could pull into a parking lot quickly. Reguardless of direction it would lock up and buck.

Well I put the car up on 2 jacks in the front and spun the tires fine. So then I put the whole car up and the back 2 wheels will move about an eighth before they will lock up either way I turn it. So I took the transfer case out and the output shaft spins freeley. I try to do that to the input on the driveshaft and it will turn barely and then stop again. I am thinking this is the rear diff. Probably seized or broke or something. Does anyone have one or know someone who has one? It is a viscous rear. I think all I will need is the pumpkin because shafts should be fine. Let me know what you got or can find asap.
Thanks
Brandon

Is this a 1g? 3 bolt or 4? Manual or automatic...

I've got a 1g 3-bolt lsd out and ready to go. I also have a 1g 4 bolt for my project car,...but you'd have to replace it.

I can deliver either of the two I have, or find you the other.

Wallmart parking lots suck for wrenching....you should have coasted into the liquor store parking lot... :D

Let me know,

John

Its a 2g. Walmart sucks but that is as far as I could get, didn't really like going that far and risking more damage.

LSD or non 2G? ABS or non? I might have a rear diff I could sell you to replace yours.

I have a 2g M/T non-lsd complete assembly collecting dust.

You can have it for free

After running through the symptoms on the phone with him, I think it might be he grenaded Jack's 4 spider center diff.

You are making that assumption based on a phone call? Interesting.

From his description:
The front wheels will move
The output shaft moves
the rear wheels will not move

The 4-spider has nothing to do with the rear wheels turning or not turning when the t-case is disconnected

Therefore:

it sounds like he blew the rear diff up.

I am positive that if he takes the car back to Jack he will be taken care of. Jack is pretty good with the drivetrains on these things, stands behind his work and will always make things right.

Actually I talked to steve when I was messing with it last night. I took the rear diff apart and it now moves ok. So I decided to put it in the air and start the car and try to get the tires moving just a little. As soon as the tires move it makes a horrible clunking noise in the tranny. Seems like it comes immediately to the passengers side of the transfer case. I called Jack and basically he thinks I am crazy because nobody has broken one of his 4 spiders before. I guess he will be out of town starting friday or saturday until a little over a week later. NOw I have to wait until he comes back to take it to him. Trying to find a place to put the dang thing so its not at wally world until then.

Anything is possible Don. Brandon cut a few 1.6 60' last week with his 18" rims. Not to mention his very very aggressive street driving. I am not making an assumption. I ran Brandon through a bunch of scenarios. It all leads to transmission damage. And it appears it may be pointing towards the center differential. I am sure Jack will take care of it, but he hasn't been exactly in a hurry to take care of us lately. You sure jump to his defense a lot. And with all the guys I have been helping, I have seen a lot of unhappy customers. Like us with the crankwalk fix. 60 miles baby.

He did stuff to Tommy's car that he didn't even know he did. I could go on and on, just know there are those that are unhappy with him.

Keep it on topic and without a shit fest. If you guys have stuff to discuss PMs seem to be up and working :)

This is an information thread regarding a technical problem. The next person to drag this off topic into drama will have warnings added.
