View Full Version : Never use a shitty designed spool...

...Or this can happen.

I don't remember what brand of spool this was. The bolts were torqued and red loctite was used. Guess it wasn't enough.

I got seriously lucky that all it did was punch a hole through the trans case and mangle the bolts and sleeves.

No chipped gears, no other holes. Hell. no real anything so to speak.

I have an idea on how to redesign this thing to where it should be unbreakable unless you physically shatter the diff case. At that point, then you have more pressing issues than a loose spool.

Working on it...

Thanks Goes to Dave for getting me the parts I needed to get the piece back on the road with little down time.

Let's see what kind of carnage I can wreak this upcoming weekend.

WOW thats crazy. What were you doing when all this happened? Care to explain.

Prior to it finally getting crunchy, I did one hard top-of-1st to bottom-of-3rd pull spinning completely through second and then no boost until I left Autozone.

What tipped me off about something going awry was the fact that it felt like a big spring was pulling on the front bumper when I backed out of the parking spot. I knew something wasn't right and limped it the mile and a half home. About 1/4 mile from Autozone, I heard a loud Whirr and a crunk. Pulled over and that's when I realized it was pissing smurf blood all over the ground.

Got it home and tore it apart the next day.

 That does suck, are you going to be able to fix the hole or are you going to need a new case? Hope you get it going again soon.

It's already back on the road. I yanked the trans the next day and installed a new center diff and center case section and reinstalled it in the car.

Drove it the next morning allowing the sealent to cure.

Have you ever tried a welded center? I have been TIG welding them for years and have never seen anyone break any of those...

Yup.

That was what I was originally running before the new trans.

I didn't realize that my welded center was a different gear pitch than what my countershaft was.

I had to resort to installing the spool that I had laying around into a compatable stock diff.

I'm not too fond of the idea of the open 4-spider center diff for drag racing, but I love the handling that it gave me. I forgot how well the talon cornered on these crappy streets.

I will be building a backup tranny with my old welded center. Just have to pick up some synchros and install a new bellhousing. I cracked the last one pretty good as well. I'll get photos of that up here pretty soon.

Yeah, that is always a pain to deal with here too. I found there are 3 different gears for the center diff housing. 2 of which look perfectly the same to the naked eye. I had to make a little adapter for a drill to spin up the intermediate shaft so I can hear if the housing teeth are the right ones or not. I have tried measuring, and looking at it, but sometimes can't tell. If it's not right, I get a lot of gear noise when I spin the shafts up.
