Is this a 1g? 2g? Turbo?

First I'd replace your plugs and wires. Mine was bucking when I first bought it and that seam to help. Definitely use the NGK plugs. NGK wires if can. I got some Autozone wires to hold me over.

You also need to do some basic engine diags such as compression test and a boost leak test (if you have turbo).

Check your MAS and make sure its clean. Mine was covered in grease and getting some MAF/MAS cleaner at Pep Boys seam to help it run smoother.

Another good place to start if you're new to these cars:

does it ever go above your actual RPM or just bounce from current RPM down?

If so... then check your charging system... weak battery/alternator will cause the speedo and tach to behave erratically when the system is on low voltage and the demands of the ignition system start to step up due to higher speeds/rpm.

My VR4 had this problem... was a bad connection to the positive terminal on the battery... it was tight just "rigged" by the previous owner in a way that it didnt make great conductivity.
