View Full Version : Tranny Problem

I have a 1990 Eagle Talon Tsi (AWD) that I just purchased and it has some issues with the transmission.

First question: How do I tell how many splines it is?
Second question: It feels like a mount is broken or something for the tranny, because the clutch feels good (stock clutch, not replaced recently) but when I let off in second it pops out of gear no matter what rpm. Then, when I try to reverse, if I let off of the gas it feels like something in the drivetrain binds up and I have to put it back in reverse. Outside of that, it sometimes wont even go into first or second gear at all.

So would it be too quick to say that I need a new tranny? Or could it be a mount or something else that I'm not thinking of that is broken?

Thanks

Taylor

Crawl underneath the car and look at the front end of the transfer case (directly below the oil pan). If it's made of cast iron, then you have a 23 spline. If it's made of aluminum, then you have a 22 spline.

As far as it popping out of gear, unless your linkage is out of adjustment, you have some worn parts inside and will warrant a rebuild or at least a quick and dirty fix.

If the trans and t-case are original they are 22 spline.

Sounds like a dragging clutch that was ignored and now it trashed the synchros in the trans. The trans has excessive thrust wear and/or your synchro slider has damaged teeth for 2nd gear.

Your reverse problem sounds like it could be the 5th/R rail and/or 3/4 rail are missing a part or have damage. There are several balls and springs for the complex reverse synchro these trannies have and if anything is not right with it you could sometimes go into 2 gears at once when going into reverse. It's hard to say without looking at it though.

I would just rebuild the trans. The issues yours has is typical of an old unit that needs a rebuild. If you are in a hurry and need something right now, I have a 90 unit in stock and ready to go. It is also 22 spline and has a 'value' rebuild which highlights of the rebuild included double synchro 2nd gear and a 4-spider with torrington center diff. This unit was shipped out to a customer but was returned because UPS damaged the bell housing. I have sent another out to the customer and he is all taken care of, but now I am stuck with this one and having to pull teeth with UPS now for the damages. It was cracked on the bell housing but I can easily fix it with the TIG. I will warranty the crack repair for life, so you won't have ANY issues with it. I'll sell the trans for $1300 without core, $1100 with your core as exchange. Here are a few pics of the unit:

Damn Jack, I honestly wish that I had the money for that. Right now I'm trying to sell my supra so that I can get money for this Talon project. If/When that happens I will easily have the cash but as of right now I wouldn't be able to afford that unit. If you still have the trans by the time I sell my car I would buy it from you.

Thanks for the help.

Yes, I never had the time to put it up for sale. It is still here if you want it.

I want it. I am in Iraq right now. My father and my little brother live in the Springs. They will be picking it up for me. Just tell me how you want me to pay you and when is a good time to have them get it from you.
