View Full Version : What didn't break?

So yesterday was a private track rental at Bandimere.
First pass I lost the oil feed line going to the turbo. Spent about 3 hours cleaning up the mess on the car itself.
The rest of the passes I was doing 3rd gear pulls to get the the tune ironed out.
On the last pass I broke the rear passengers side axle in two places, created a new vent hole in the transmission and shredded the alternator belt.
Not sure what the damage is on the transmission but I'm sure its not going to be pretty.

I'll take some pictures this weekend when I get everything torn down.

I heard about this last night. Sounds like it was an overall good time though. The best part about breaking things is getting new things to replace them!

Unless they were new things, and you are already broke

Dave forgot, he somehow broke the weld on the water filler just below the cap on his WAIC. When that boy breaks, he breaks :) The axle and trans issue was definately from the track prep. I've never seen it so sticky at Bandi. I walked out to pick up some of his pieces and almost couldn't get back off the track. Nearly lost my shoes a number of times and I tie them pretty well. Fun days. Mike Patrick's evo has a new best time, but sadly his B/C is acting up (wouldn't go over 24.8PSI) so he'll have to get that resolved. All in all, I think we had a good time.

Sorry to hear about the damage. :(
Are you running slicks or DR's? I don't care when the track is that sticky for AWD drivetrain. I'd rather have the tires spin and save the parts.
Hopefully the trans isn't too messed up.

Wow! Talk about carnage. Did you get any good passes?
Remember N/T's may be slow, but they don't break, er, maybe not quite as often. :p

Jeebus Dave, talk about dropping the hammer! That's a lot to break on one launch. What were the conditions of the launch? (boost, rpm, preload e-brake, etc...?)

I will agree with you there! Cars can be very expensive some times.... pretty much all the time. Nothing easy will ever break. It is always something really complicated that nobody has every heard of.

Nope didn't get any good passes in. The last pass I wanted to work on launching with the new turbo but apparently that didn't happen.

Looks like what happened was the rev's went to 7k before the clutch grabbed. When it did grab the whole car bogged down then took off. Oh well. The 3575 doesn't make the boost off the line like the 3065 did so it looks like I need to work on that a bit.

Couldnt' have been a total loss... now you know what NOT to do :D

Fix the launch control and that will allow you to concentrate on modulating the clutch.
Personally, I feel that with a twin and a larger turbo, launch control is a must.
It was pretty funny watching you bounce around on the launch though. :)

Sorry that Dave had a major grenade event. At least he could still drive it up on the trailer :)
The track was so heavily prepped that you could hear the cars sucking the VHT off the track as they rolled to the staging lights. Sounded like driving through a section of road that had just been covered with 1/4" of tar... Your running shoes stuck to the track like the soles and the track were coated with rubber cement. It was lucky that the ricers were not invited, as it would have been inevitable that one would have stuck to the track at the staging lights with insufficient torque to escape, and had to pay big dollars for Marcus to hook up the tow rope and break him out of the glue.
Dave had lots of company in the "break it" department. Several of the other people running broke something, probably because the track prep allowed the cars to hook up so well. Nobody, however, was able to break a water to air filler neck like Dave. :)
I personally think that our cars would have been faster with a little less track prep. Bet the guys at PMI won't ever say that :)
Beautiful day. Great company. Nice cars. No tickets on the way home. What more could you ask for? Thanks to Jake for taking time to work on the tune, and for the invite :) The car's best run (Jake driving) was 12.14 at 116 at 24 PSI. When the boost control gets solved, there's still lots of room for improvement.

.
You should walk the track in the summertime at a "big boys" race, when the track temp is around 110. When I was staging the Titan Outlaw Jr's, I thought I was walking on superglue.

Well I got the transmission out of the car. No obvious damage to the casing so more than likely the gear oil was spewing out one of the axle seals.
However I'm willing to bet the syncro's are finally toast.
Tomorrow I'll pull the rear axle out and see what needs to be done.

Got the rear axle out. Sheered it clean on the outer joint. Time for some new ones :).

So, was the damage limited just to the axle, or did it damage the rear diff as well?

Looks to be just the axle itself was damaged.
--Dave
Sounds like you guys are having too much fun up there!
Sorry to hear about the breakage Dave.

Jeebus Dave, I'm Sorry to hear about your misfortune at the track. But for the first time in your cars current condition I can say that my car is faster! Just kidding, your car on jack stands runs laps around mine. Hope you get it back up and running soon!

Well the verdict is in on the transmission.
The 4 spider center that was in the transmission at the the time was locked up. Not sure whats going on there but I'll find out when I look at the diff.
The front diff had its gears seized up so that was basically scrapped and a new one was put in.
Also the shift forks that BM put in were heavily worn down.
One of the shift rails had some sort of damage. When the trans was put back together and tested it would go into 2nd but not come out of second easily. New rail was put in and it shifts fine.

With what you posted you use for gear oil in the trans lube thread it's not surprising you have center and front diff issues. The worn shift forks are also a pretty good sign of oil that was not up to par.

Yeah the new setup will be getting Redline. Also the shift forks that were in the transmission were technically "aircraft aluminum" however I'm not the only one that has had them wear down.
