Hey everyone. This is my first post here so I guess I'll introduce myself. My name is Jeremy. I've got a '98 GS-T that I bought in Aug of '07 that I've been obsessing with. I bought it because I've always wanted a DSM and really needed something to take my mind off of all the other shit. I'm a regular M-F 9-5 kind of guy but I'm also a musician and a family guy.

Anyway, I love this car. It's kind of therapeutic. Most of the time I've spent with it has been making minor repairs, customizing it to my taste and making sure that it's running right. I've been driving it daily and it's a pretty solid little car even though she's got a lot of miles on her.

Here's my dilemma. The T-25 is starting to smoke a little. When I first noticed it, I went into panic mode and bought another turbo. I found it on Craigslist and was told it was a rebuilt Evo III 16g. The price was good so I bought it but I know it's not an Evo. The compressor wheel does not have the alternating fins and the exhaust flange is squared. The compressor housing has been ground down and polished so, even though it is shiny and pretty, there are no numbers to read on it. The hotside has a Mitsubishi logo on it and some numbers (78-11020 in one area 02 080 on another and a 16 by where the hotside meets the compressor housing). The wastegate actuator has been welded and will fit but the arm has to be pulled pretty far out for it to make to make it to the flapper arm.

What I'm hoping is that someone in the here in the Springs might be able to recognize what this thing really is. I also go to Denver every Wednesday for work so I could meet up with someone there too. I'll try to get some pictures and post 'em here because I know that would be the easiest thing but I think it's gonna be tough to get any decent pics.

Any and all help would be appreciated. Oh. And nice to meet you all.

Yeah, I've been reading about the one who is called Jack. I guess you're right, I probably should pop into his shop.

Thanks for the welcome.

Welcome to RMDSM. That is one of the best first posts I've ever seen. You already have my respect. Good luck with the car and the turbo.

That's some funnay shite right there!

For the good of the board, and the fact that you're new to us here, I'll fill you in on a 'lil secret about "the one who is called Jack"...

He doesnt have a pug, much less any kind of dog, so I don't consider him a tuner worthy of working on a clapped out pinto, much less a fine machine such as yours. :p

(ooops, just pissed off half the board... :D )

Other than that, his compulsive gambling on professional bowling, and his dis-like for green cars, he's a valuable resource to the community.

I'm sure if you could post a pic up, we could help you make some decisions about whether your turbo is worth using. Does it have any shaft play, and are the fins all intact?

Also, it would help to know what your plans are for the car, and if you have any supporting mods, or if they will be in the budget soon.

Welcome to the board!

EDIT: teacups and dafodils wtf?

Everybody knows I only eat aspen bark, and only if it's in season!

A pox on thee!

I was just thinking the same thing.

I'm sure if you submit some pictures, about 20 of us could give you an accurate description of your delima. Wow...I wish I could say something that would make you feel better about the turbo you just bought. :(

Wow. Thanks everyone. You know, this is the third DSM forum I've joined and the first one I've actually posted to. You guys are alright.

I'll stop in and see Jack and the boys. If that doesn't work I'll post pics. I dunno maybe make it some sort of on-line game show like "Name That Turbo!" or something. Just a thought.

I don't really have any specific numbers in mind for power necessarily, I was originally thinking about a T28 or one of the 16g variants (probably Evo - makes the most sense) and doing the basic supporting mods. Walbro 190, 550-660cc injectors and an S-AFC II. I already bought a PocketLOGGER, installed a boost gauge, put on a 3" turbo back exhaust and got a Joe P MBC. I haven't put the MBC on yet because I'm not sure how wise it is to up the boost on a turbo that's on it's way out (any thoughts on this?) If everything works out I'll piece together the rest of what I need a little at a time. Maybe a piece every paycheck or so. I need to find out about this turbo before I do any of that though.

I took the turbo up to Jack's yesterday. I guess it's just a 14b and not a 16g like I was told. I'm alright with that though, I just didn't want to find out it was some Chinese knock off. I'm about to order an install kit for it.

I tried a Chinese knock off 16g from Ebay once, it was awful. The turbo didn’t last 6 months. It’s best to go name brand with most everything.

It is an actual Mitsubishi turbo, luckily. I got it on but I've been babying the car because I have an injector issue. I should have that resolved in the next few days if my luck improves any.

Not necessarily a great thing to have a Mitsubishi turbo.

But better then a knock off right?

If you have a genuine 16g IMO its better than a knock off.

Otherwise.....probably not a whole lot of difference

Most of that turbo technology is super old school.....so really the techniques to cast and cut wheels isn't all that different. Taking your chances either way IMO.

Warrantied turbos are the best....Chinese or not.:)

Problem with knockoffs is that they don't have the same quality control as the real stuff.

Up to this point, there are very few "real" turbo manufacturers. Honeywell (a.k.a. Garrett), AiResearch, Borg Warner, MHI heavy industries, and I'm sure I'm forgetting a few.

For performance based turbos, Garrett seems to be the biggest name with MHI, BW and AiResearch behind.

Any genuine turbo can have inferior parts or workmanship. Knockoffs tend to not have as much care put into the design, making of the parts, assembly, and balancing.

Personally I would never buy a knockoff turbo unless it was to be used for a direct comparison to a similar sized genuine turbo.
