So I have a 99 eclipse n/t (420a) and its leaking oil really bad, bad enough you would be able to follow where i went by the oil trail. I think its the rear main seal but im not too sure. Does anyone know if those self dye test kits work? I dont have a lot of money and I definitely dont have the $1000 everyone wants to charge to fix the oil leak.
Also, what are my options for the oil leak. I know i have the valve cover, oil pan, oil filter, rear main seal (I dont even know what this does). If it is the rear main seal can i fix it myself, i have done minor work on my car but dropping the transmission is definitely a step up from what ive done.
Any help would be awesome. THanks everyone

If it looks like the rear main seal, it probably is.
Yes, the dye kits work pretty darn good if you are in a dark garage at night.

Also what you could do is get under there with some brake clean and go nuts cleaning everything. Then I could give you a can of leak trace powder. You spray it on the questionable spots and it can give you a good idea where it is coming from. I like the leak powder better because it makes everything white on an otherwise dark/black area!

Thanks for the advise guys. I think I'm just going to buy a gasket kit and pull my motor and redo ever gasket. Its got 110k miles and im guessing gaskets are going to start going anyways. So, anyone know how to pull a 420a haha

Oh heck no! This is not as easy as it is with the 4g63. If your asking this kind of question I would advise not trying it unless you have help that has done it already. The 420a is a pain in the butt. And alot of the gaskets are a SERIOUS pain to get to.
The rear main seal isnt all that bad to do though with the motor in the car.

Thanks, I have mine on the engine stand in the garage. Im just waiting for the gasket set and im going to throw it together and put it back in. Im starting to get scared that im going to put it back together and either did something wrong and it wont start or run right, or im giong to put a gasket on wrong and its giong to be leaking oil again. Ill keep you all updated tho i should be getting my parts today or tomorrow.

Just take your time and make sure everything is how it should be and you will be fine. I know the feeling, I am sure everyone on here has at one point. There is nothing wrong wit being sure it is done right the first time! Good luck!
