The $500 dollar racing series is coming to Colorado at PMI in March. I'm starting now to look for a donor car and various -freebee- type mods. If anyone wants in on it, let me know. We need 2 other drivers and a handful of pit crew guys. No experience necessary, just balls of steel and the courage of a Spartan.
Who's in?

Holy hell, would this be a riot or what? LOL
Once you find a car let me know what you need. I'm sure I have a few bit and pieces in the junk pile.

For sure Hal! Thank you very, very much. We need 2 more drivers, you interested?
Sure, I'm in.
Obviously my meager wrenching skills are included.
Thankfully they far exceed my driving ability :D

That's a great deal for that car! What do you think guys? Is that the one?
Everyone that is volunteering for Pit Crew, please add your name below. If you want in, go to the website and make sure you understand the rules of the event and what not. It will cost you $50 for a Pit Crew pass for the two days. Only sign up if you are 100% sure! This race is 2 days of full throttle, 7 hours per day with undoubtably a long ass night between the two days.
Pit Crew Chief: Marcus Martinez
Jake, Hal, myself, and Ron Nelson for driving. (Ray's gonna be in Costa Rica Jake)
I think the car will do. The cage can be modded for bars that it needs.
We could recoupe quite a bit of the cost by selling off the interior (it looks pretty good in the pics).
I have a head, cams, cam gears, oil pan, intake, exhaust, and t-case.
We need a 6 bolt short block, front cover, clutch, flywheel, turbo (16g?) and transmission.
It's an awd drive chassis, but we could run it as a front wheel drive and sell off the rear diff and axles ;)
It's a 430 mile drive (one way), so if we go it'd be a major suck to not pick it up.

I can't afford the 500 to drive and looks like we already filled up on them, but I will definitley be in the pit crew.
i have the 2.0 6bolt block, just needs bearings. crank, pistons, rods and all.

Helping with any crew-chief'ingmanship.
For those offering parts.
Keep in mind you may never get them back.
They can claim the car for $1500 but any share of it probably won't come close to covering what the parts are worth.
Oh, and where are we going to build this thing? I don't have any room!
Erron Spalsbury
09-15-2009, 11:02 AM
Exactly right. Any parts donated to the car are exactly that, a donation. You won't get them back ever.
Since this event is in March, I say we stick with AWD. :)

I have the DOM tubing to fix the cage and Erron has the bender. I'm sure we can source the parts to make an AWD trans from the junk laying around. I have racing seats we can use that will be lighter and better than the stock POS's and I dont' care if they get "purchased" from us. We'll need to source some kind of cheap suspension versus run the old worn out stuff. Evo stuff might somewhat bolt up and that is better and cheap. I can grab a 16G.
Solid bushings are a turn of the lathe away :D

Come on Erron. I was getting excited just reading this thread. When I met you at HPR last month, you didn't seem like someone who would let things get in the way.
There is always going to be someone who gets upset when they feel rejected in some way.

Ya know, if you guys keep it up, this could be the biggest DSM meet in Colorado!!
I didn't read the specific rules, but the $500, is that for the initial cost of the car and any other purchased parts except the required safety items?
Are donated parts not counted in the $500?
$500 max car value before safety (cage, etc)
$500 entry fee
$100 per driver
$50 per driver chumpcar license
$25 extra for each driver w/o some form of road racing comp license
$50 transponder fee
So, that's $1200 cash out of pocket, not including what we have to put into the car.
Yup, donated parts count towards the value.
Erron Spalsbury
09-16-2009, 08:15 PM
Alright, let's keep pushing forward. I want this to be a collective effort from all of you guys. That's what it's going to take to win or even finish this race honestly. :)
All of you need to go and read the rules for sure. There's a few kickers in the rules that everone needs to know about. If you see one that cathes your attention, post it in here so it doesn't get over looked. They really want it to be a $500 dollar car, but that total doesn't include safety gear. We all have to have a HANS device to drive as well, but you can use mine. We will have to outfit your helmets with HANS tabs though, or borrow my helmet. They don't allow for open face helmets either. They have to be SA rated, no motorcycle helmets, must have a SA fire rating to be used. So, in addition to the car itself, which has to be documented as a 500 dollar car, we need safety gear. This list isn't huge, but I think we can borrow from various race cars to meet the needs. We need a FIA/SFI rating on all of the following.
Race Seat
5 or 6 point harness
Fire suppression system, beer in the car does not count!
Window net
Fire suit for fuelers and drivers, which I know Marcus will fit in mine and Hal may as well?
Gloves, Sox, Shoes, and balcava. (not the dessert dish)
Without making this a huge post, check out the rules and post up anything you see that needs attention. We also need a theme/team name. Post up some ideas!
Crew membersand drivers, it's the previously posted entry fee for each of you. You all must attend the 2 hour class as well on flags and communication which will be held at the track. If you have any racing credentials, bring them! FIA licenses, CTT licenses, PDX, Log Books, Silverstate, Pro Rally, SCCA, NASA, any and everything you have, bring it with you. (it's not mandatory, but it sure helps when talking to the scruteneers)
I had a tough day yesterday fellas, let's all start over and make this thing happen. We truly have a huge brain trust of DSM'ers in here, let's put it to work! I'll say it again, yes, all of you are welcome to participate in this event on one level or another. Since it's a local event let's make some noise have a HUGE crew show up. They'd shit bricks if we had a 30 man crew for one car, LOL!
Step 1 - find car
Step 2 - wonder why the hell we picked that particular car
fhudsonjr
09-16-2009, 09:18 PM
Step 3 - Pick another car?
$500...that's gonna be a real challenge especially since it includes donated parts.
v413nc3
09-17-2009, 02:55 AM
I have a transponder from my car so we can skip that fee. I'll be using my restraint system, it will only take a few minutes to swap it in when it's my turn to drive.
Erron, Ron and I all have our racing credentials so Hal will be the one that is most harassed. Although the class isn't too horribly bad I'm thinking.

It's basically a rolling shell right now. It will need:
-Fuel Tank and pump
-Longblock Engine with manis and turbo)
-Transmission (my old one probably won't hold up to enduro races)
-Minor wiring in the engine bay
-ECU (2g ECU patch harness?)
-Front wheel bearings
-Instrumentation (factory cluster is still usable)
Safety equipment needed to be installed.
The basics - Wheels, tires, brakes (have big brake calipers for it)
I'd have to take a much closer look again. It's been a while since I've touched it.

First: They state the car Has to be "valued at less than $500". Has anyone checked the rules further to see how they determine the "value"?
I was wondering how all the parts being donated affect the "value".
Second: On driver qualifications...if you do not have prior road racing experience with a recognized liscense, can you still drive by taking their driver course?
If I can, I'll volunteer to drive also if needed. I will also crew one way or the other.

O.K. Lets plan on getting it moved on October 10th. That can also double as the meeting day. Be sure to bring a notepad for any notes or any parts volunteered.
In order to get it *rollable*, it'll need brake rotors (big brake probably) at minimum. I have a set of wheels to roll it around on for now.
The front wheel bearings are shot at this point. I have access to a press. If someone can get me the bearings and seals, I can get those pressed in before the car gets moved.
Guys. I will warn everyone now. There are still quite a few goodies on this car that would probably throw up a red flag to the car's value.
I will be removing most (if not all) of the higher dollar items from the shell. I'll throw on any of the stock pieces that I have for it.
If anyone has any comments or concerns about this, please let me know.

October 10th will be the day we catalog everything we will need and transport the shell to it's build location.
Erron. Are we going to build it at your place? Or does anyone else have a better located/equipped build site?
*Edit*
If Hal will be providing the bearings for your block, I or someone here near or in Aurora can take it to my work as I have an open engine stand there that I can mount it on and do a quick and dirty rebuild on the block with.
I will be the one towing the chassis and I will have my truck to take up/bring down parts.
Also.
If there is anyone with parts that are willing to donate(forefit) for this project, who do not want to make the drive, contact me and I can pick them up from anywhere along the front range.

My house is fine with me. Especially since we have the cage that needs to be modified. We will have to get it running fairly quickly as the winter months approach. Need to be able to move it in and out of the garage. :) This also allows me to put the graphics on as we progress. What's our theme fellas? Come up with some ideas and we'll discuss it Saturday. Anything and everything that we can get into the car should be there. Are we planning on selling anything off the car? (interior? Is there one?)
I have 2 soccer games saturday (I coach both kiddo's teams) but I'm finished at noon. Anytime after that is fine with me.

At this point, let's just get the shell to Errons and we will catalog it when this gathering is underway.
I have access to ATE superblue for around $20/liter. How much is Motul now? Factory brake fluid?
Coolant is going to be straight water per the rules. Transmission fluids will probably be some flavor of redline or Royal Purple. That choice will be left up to the transmission owner.

I say bring everything you want to donate to the cause. Anything that isn't used will be given back to the donater anyway, but it would be better to have it and not need it than not have it and need it. Any parts you want to toss into the mix please do. We can always store it inside the car.
Which, if the car isn't running, how are we going to get it into the garage? My driveway is kinda steep.
Sink a lag bolt in your garage floor to use as an anchor, then just winch it in and out :D
Seriously, we're looking at a few weeks (at least) before we have everything ready so we can fire it up.
I'm sure we'll probably have to hit the pick'n'pull for a few things.
Making the list is key.

Well, would it make more sense to get the motor assembled and all the parts together before we move it? I'm up for it either way.
It depends.
If we move it first, work can proceed on the cage while we get the engine and drive train put together.
Either way works for me.

Guys, what are your thoughts? Input needed!
Redline89
10-07-2009, 08:34 AM
I don't care. The block came out of a running 1g. needs a timing belt, timing bearings should be good enough, pump spins, just needs a set of crank and rod bearings, head gasket, and it should be good. Dont need anything except an engine stand and basic tools.... IT EVEN HAS AN OIL FILTER!!;)

So where do we need to be, and at what time?

I won't be back from soccer till about 1:30 so anytime after that is fine with me.
Marcus, do you guys want to load it up in the morning and meet at my house at say 1:30~ish?
Mirage
10-09-2009, 12:11 PM
I'll be loading it tonight for the ride up there actually.
1:30 sounds good to me though.
I do not believe I have anything that will cause me to be late.
Give me a call if you can when you're heading back to your place. It'll take me a minimum of half hour to get up to your place anyways.

and I will just bring the block with me.

10-09-2009, 02:20 PM
I'll be there about 1330. How long do you guys think you'll be up there?
Until 1:45 :D
It will probably take a couple of hours to go thru the car in detail.
We'll want to be as thorough as possible so that we don't have to scramble to find some thing at the last minute.
We'll also have to talk which way to go on things where we have options.

Hey Hal. I didn't manage to get the bearings done until yesterday.
Turns out that your source (Napa?) gave you two different size bearings.
I finished the one side, but could not replace the other. I'll have to finish that while it's up at Errons.
Who all is going from the Aurora area? I have a couple seats still available in my truck if anyone wants to park and ride.
I'll probably be leaving around 1-1:30. Depending on when I get the green light call from Erron.
Marcus
Sigh... got to love the parts store guys.
Ok, bring the wrong one with you and I'll try to snag another one this week.

Rule 6.2.2. It is highly recommended that each team designate a non-driving Team Manager or Crew Chief who will be the point of contact during the race weekend.
Since I'm driving and Marcus is driving, I hereby nominate Steve Davis. Anyone else want that crap job? :P

I just met him 2 weeks ago so I don't know if he is qualified or not.:D
Does even Erron know crap?:p

Oh! ^^^ A 2nd nominee has entered! :p
You need to be full of crap, along with knowing all the crap in case you get questioned. It is however also, a crap job.
I am full of crap. I used to know stuff, but it has now turned to crap, so yes, I know crap. (just wish it was the right crap)

Progress report:
The car is gutted, the doors are skinned, and it got a bath. It was a little dirty to say the least. The car will be re-caged to current road racing specs.

I have two spare sets of 245 40 17's perfect for the track and some lighweight rims that have been collecting dust in the rafters. I think I also have a spare wally. Can they be used?
Erron Spalsbury
10-21-2009, 10:43 AM
We don't need the wally, stock is plenty for stock boost. The 245/17's maybe on the big side, plus we have to have a treadwear of 190 or -higher-.
Keep in mind there's always that possibility that you may never get anything you donate back. (just consider whatever you donate to be given away) They can confiscate the car if they want to and auction it off.
drmbldr
10-21-2009, 01:16 PM
The rims in the rafters are NB-9's and they have a set of 215/45/17 Nanakang NS-1's on them. Perfect shape for roadcourse. Not really concerned about losing them. I'll write them off to a good cause if the car gets auctioned.
You guys need help with anything?

10-21-2009, 02:18 PM
I mean if you're going to -give- them away, then yes, I think we can use them.
erron i a set of 255 40 17s laying around im not going to use them let me know

Things seem to be progressing along nicely.
That's a lot of work. :D
Hal, Dave, and myself got the new plates in, which extend up the box rails, the main hoop and the forward down bars. The forward bars are tied into the under dash cross member and are also stitched welded in a few places along the pillars. Should make for a good bumper car!

I haven't taken any yet. I will though, it's really looking nice.
In case you guys haven't seen the results on the Chump Car forums, the first race in Portland was this last weekend. It looks like documentation is paramount for what we spend on the car. Hal, keep the ebay reciept for the el-cheapo gasket set and anything else that will be on the car. We need to think about ordering brake pads. Thoughts on bang for the buck?
I wonder if they would include in the total the 6 angle grinder wheels and dozen sawzall blades it took to get the old cage out? Har-har-har
This next weekend Hal is sourcing the freebee tranny and I have little time this weekend myself with family stuff. Let's start planning out he next weekend following this one and get a plan together. We need you guys helping!! Is everyone ok with the following weekend schedule?

Hahahaha, good call. We need a 3 ring binder to document every step of the process. With my printing capabilities I'll keep a log going so we are 100% legit for the tech inspectors.
