View Full Version : Exhausts and hp restrictions?

Hi All,

I'm still new to 'upgrading' cars and such and am wondering about exhausts. I've read plenty of stuff about how increasing the size of your exhaust can increase the turbo's effeciency for spool up and flow...but I haven't seen anyplace that gives rough hp limits for various sized exhausts?

So I've got a few questions... :)

How much difference is there really between a press-bent and mandrel-bent exhaust when it comes to hp and efficiency?

How much difference is there between a 2.25" and 3" exhaust in terms of hp and efficiency?

And, is there a rough top limit for what hp a particular type/size of exhaust could support?

If it helps with the numbers, I'm more interested in Talon AWD performance, but would love to know the 'rules-of-thumb' to start learning! :D

Cheers,

Mandrel bends offer about 40% more flow in tight radius corners than a pressbent system, but with an AWD, your lucky because there are only a few MINOR bends.

I think you meant 2.5", not 2.25", our stock exhaust is near 2.25"s. But anyhow, A pressbent 2.5" exhaust system has yielded 12 second timeslips at this altitude. Of course I would opt for the 3", because im an extremist.

A 3" mandrel bent exhaust system will support upwards of 600HP.
Hope this helps.

That does help and yes, you are right. I did mean 2.5". :)

And you even anwsered a question I had, but didn't post, by telling me the size of the stock exhaust. How's that for mind-reading.

Thanks Rob!

Hi Dave,

Can we get this thread moved over to the Exhaust forum when you do your cleanup?

Thanks!
