How much boost can a 1G turbo block take?

Right now with the boost controller I'm running 17psi, and the upgraded fuelpump and a 2.5 catback is one the way, the pump is good for 22 psi of boost but can the block safely take it?

Also how much boost before you need race gas?

Thanks in advance!!

Well it depends on what mods you have. The best way is to datalog the car and tune for knock.

so its probably also best to do this on a dyno???
Is there a all-wheel dyno in Colorado?

A dyno is used to calc HP.

IMO before you start boosting spend some $$$ and get a datalogger.

Just to be safe on a stock block, a good rule of thumb (without a datalogger) is to run no more than 15-16 psi on pump gas, anything more than that should require race gas. The block itself can take tons of boost, it's what's inside the block that matters, ie forged pistons, stronger rods, etc.

A bunch. But the stock headbolts, at least in my experience, will stretch somewhere between 22 and 24 psi, not too mention what Cody said above. I just got done installing a metal HG and ARP headstuds, to prevent this. Boost is a relative thing; with a datalogger you can monitor knock sums and timing. This what you need and want to do. Detonation from overboosting and/or running too lean, or shitty gas, can and will bend rods, blow headgaskets, crack rings, etc. You get the picture.

First off, who told you your FP was good for 22 psi of boost? And what turbo did they say that 22 psi of boost was coming out of? What FP do you have?
If you still have the stock 14b turbo and the stock SMIC, turn the boost down, all you are doing at 17 psi is getting lots of knock and having your timing pulled. Bad. Go back down to 16 psi at least, please. When the timing gets pulled, the EGT's will go up. This is not good either, in your case. Even with a FMIC, the 14b turbo is too inefficient on pump gas up here. I've been there and done that, with a datalogger.

It really depends on your complete set-up, but especially how efficient your turbo is at a given pressure ratio. A datalogger will always tell you what the most boost you can run is. IE: I have a Garrett 50-trim and I can easily push 21-22 psi on pump gas on the street because of my set-up and the turbo's efficiency at that pressure ratio.

Here's a dumb question, but where might I go about buying a datalogger and how much do they cost? I'm running a ton of boost which is probably (ok is) stupid , and I'd really like to know how it's running. Are there any options if you don't have a laptop or palm? Oh yes, my car is a 92. Thanks

You could (should) also get a volt meter and hook it up to your o2 sensor. That way you can accurately read your rich/lean mixture, if you can't afford a datalogger or palm.

Hey guys, this is the first time I've posted here, and I need some advice.. First of all, I have a 95 GS-T, with a 1G Evo motor in it. I removed the old 2G engine because of some real crank walk problems I was having. Anyway, the only things this motor has done to it are intake and an Apex BOV, and an HKS FCD, because I was getting really bad fuel cut. So here's what's going on: I got the car back, and was driving it for like a week or so without a boost gauge, thinking it was feeling really good, and figuring I was running maybe 14psi. Well, I installed my boost gauge and A/F gauge to find out, that in 1st/2cnd gear it was pulling all the way up to 18psi, and in 3rd gear and up pushing about 20.5psi. Now the only thing that kept me slightly comfortable about this was that my a/f gauge goes all the way to the rich side under heavy boost. Now here's my question I guess.. Shouldn't the waste gate be opening to keep the boost in check? I've been really careful now that I know how much boost it's running to keep it under 16-17psi, but it's a real pain having to worry about it so much, and not just having a ceiling where the boost would stop at a safe level. I'm definitely worried that my fuel system/internals are definitely not set to run that kind of boost without blowing something up. Any suggestions? One other problem, my BOV, no matter how I adjust it, makes like a giggling sound. What can I do to fix that? As far as I knew, that's what mal-adjusted BOVs sounded like.. Anyway, any advice would be appreciated.

first: don't believe that A/F guage. its eye candy. your 02s could only be hitting .75 but the A/F guage is going to say your rich.

second: if the bov is fluttering, there is a problem. if there is a vacuum assist, use it. i could be that you are not running enough boost to open it all the way.
