Ok, so I'm about ready to finally start ordering the parts I need to rebuild the '90s block. I'm gonna get ARP rod and main bolts, but am still undecided between 2g pistons/rings vs EVO pistons/rings. The 2g are, of course, 8.5:1 while the EVO pistons are 8.7:1 and are little lighter that the 2g pistons. The EVOs cost about $440 with the rings compared to $259 for the 2g set. So would it even be worth the extra $200 for the EVOs? Does anybody have any experience with the EVOs? I'm pretty much leaning towards the 2g set, basically because of the cost and my best friend ran low 11s on them with stock cams and head and it was only getting faster. Hopefully I will have the block done and back in the car within a month, then get the 20G cartridge and Fluidyne radiator and be back on the road again by June! :)
Thanks,
Cody
Higher compression == more off-boost fun, but in the long run less boost can be run on the big end with them. I'd go for the EVO parts of $$ isn't a concern, and run 23 psi instead of 25.
June? JUNE??! Come ON man! Get with the PROGRAM!

For the price of the Evo pistons you could get some Forged units. To offer an opposing view than Salmi's. You can turn up the boost for free & equal the same amount of power the higher compression would give you? It all depends on your goal, how you are going to drive the car, and what you want to do with it?
Gabe, Salmi, Norm, & Greg the four quickest Colorado DSM's to date all ran stock internals. The first two were running 1G pistons & the second two were running 2G pistons (correct me if I'm wrong here). Regardless, you can go very fast with the stock parts. Reliability may vary, but I think most have had good luck if you know what you are doing when tunning. (& stay away from N2O)=D
I went the budget rebuild route:
1G big rods- came with shortblock
New .20 1G pistons & rings- $320 w/ MHM discount
Shotpeen rods- $50
Ceramic coat piston tops- $40
Cryo pistons & rods- $100
Total of $510
This *should* hold up to more than I can throw at it w/ a 20G or smaller turbo w/ propper tunning & care.

Well, I've decided to throw the head back on the car and see how everything is.
The short story is that a shop back in Omaha (where I used to live) told me that they did a leak down test and that all cylinders were bad after it majorly overheated one night. I have questions if that shop really knows what they're doing seeing as how they just fucked up my best friends new motor while installing a brand new tensioner and tensioner pulley.
I just checked the head for flatness and it's perfect, the valves are possibly questionable, but "appear" ok. I know, I should get it done while everythings off the car, but since it's never been determined if anything was ever wrong I'd like to put it back together and then see how it is. Plus, our funds won't support a major rebuild right now and I really want to feel this car again, especially after riding in Dave's car and seeing John's dyno #s! :) We also have other cars, so it's not a major thing if it'll need repaired anyways.
So all I need to order is a 20G cartridge and a Fluidyne radiator, plus maybe some new gauges, and get a datalogger cable somehow. Then, hopefully, everything will be ok. The car previously only smoked under boost with lots of throttle, but that was found out to be the seals in the old 20G which was shot anyway. My last run with that car was a low 13 at 15 lbs of boost on pump gas. I was dissapointed as I figured it would still be in the 12s at 15 lbs and pump gas, but when the 20G was pulled off we found that both wheels were almost completely gone. How it even made boost and could still even run 13s is beyond me, but hopefully it'll be back to full strength with a new 20G. Hopefully, if everything is ok, it will run low 12s for sure up here and maybe even get it back into the 11s. I guess we'll see soon enough!
Um, wish me luck, or something!

$EVO pistons $440 where the hell you buying your parts from. I got my EVO pistons for about $300 with the Rings and Pins from
www.rallispec.com they took a month to get here but I got a good deal. Call them and talk to Dave if you ever need any EVO pistons. I had to sell them because they were only bored .020 over and my block has been bored .040 over already. Thats why I went with the Eagle Rods and Wiseco Pistons. It didint make since to keep my 1g big rods since they were machined to fit the the 2g pistons. Im also having my Wiseco's ceramic coated should be pretty sweet.
