The fees to keep COSR running became too high, so they closed ALL accounts and to rejoin you have to pay an annual fee of $12.
Has anyone on here signed back up yet?? If so, how many COSR members are active again?? I'm guessing the active users will drop by A LOT now.

Yeah COSR has a poor isp. They now want something like $150/month for the site to be hosted on their services.

as far as I am concerned COSR wasnt good for anything but to make fun of people. Hell I can do that on here for free ;)
COSR is moving about a gig a day. That pushed the monthly bill from like $30 to $120. Ouch. I donated some $$ as I hadn't done so yet, and I enjoy the crap that goes on there.. :)

Yeah, but COSR has alot more than 120 members to pay for that bill. If everyone pays $1 a month someone is going to be making a huge profit, unless of course everyone stops going. I know that's what I'm doing...

exactly... even if 25 percent of the people "donate" then thats 250 bucks a month and a profit of over a grand for the year. It just doesnt add up.

well its like most websites............out to make a profit.
personally i think if you want to use the site, use it. like you can't spare $12. i don't think anyone is that broke. if you are, man you picked the wrong hobby.

LOL yeah I hear what you are saying. I just analyze everything too much I guess. Its just the principle of the thing. I dont feel like being a part of buying the admin his/her new exhaust or wheels or whatever.

Casper's a friend of mine and I can tell you honestly with the amout of shit being thrown his way recently he doesn't deserve this rep he's getting. He's worked his ass off to make that board more than just a message board. He's got more content than any other message board with that many members HANDS DOWN. What does Casper get for all his hard work? slapped upside the head with a $120 service bill. First he changed the board over to PHP, working on it NON-STOP. He eliminated a lot of the bigger avatars people can have, and he's taken some video offline to limit transfers. Then he did the unthinkable, asked for a buck a day donations. I donated before even being asked, and not just because I know Casper. He's not using the money to buy exhaust and wheels, he's using it to pay for the more than 1gb of traffic a day. He's using it to buy more T-shirts and stickers to improve the community as a whole. If he DOES use it to buy himself a dinner, lord forbid, and I don't think he will, LET HIM. He deserves a big pat on the back for all the work he's done.
Think of it like this. Say you buy a house in a nice community, you have what's called Association Dues. This money (usually between 40 and 100 or more a month) is for a variety of things. Usually trash removal, sometimes landscaping and even upkeep on the sprinkler system in YOUR hard. A buck a MONTH people, no biggie. I'm glad to be part of this community, even if it means weeding through all the $#!+ talkers to get into some real info.

My biggest problem is that a donation is supposed to be without a catch. If you dont donate to the board you cant even read posts, therefore it isnt a donation but a charge. Call it what it is and maybe people wont bitch so much.

I guess if you actually post then a "donation" would be acceptable but if you can't read the threads then how do you know if you'd even be interested in signing up.
I don't see any difference in letting people at least read the forums.

Correct!!! Like I said.... if I got some usefull information from the board then I would be happy to donate to it. If this board got in trouble id be more than happy to fork over some cash.

I admit this board is a bit slow since the member base is small but I like it since were all on the same team and get along unlike other boards/clubs do.

I can almost guarantee that since this site is a two server build that the speed will always be there. I highly doub't I'll be asking for money to help with the site. This site runs on an un-capped dsl line so it helps quite a bit.
I'd be curious to see what happens when the member base gets over 100+. So far with all the posts and members the database for the forums is like 10 megs. So we have quite a bit of room for growth on this setup.

These guys are assclowns... They are demanding money and calling it a donation. Then they start quoting the Red Cross and the Salvation Army as precedents, despite the fact that:
YOU DONT HAVE TO DONATE TO THOSE CAUSES TO ASK FOR THEIR HELP.
If youre going to require payment for using the board youre charging for a service, not requesting a donation from the membership. Thats gonna kill COSR in the end.
Besides, it was only good for shit talking anyways...

Heh, with nothing better to do at work... I have read most of this board lol (yes 12hrs of nothing == lots of free time to browse)
I have to agree even though I didnt find out about RMDSM in time to be a part of this active thread, I was on COSR when it happened, I offered Casper extremely cheap or possibly even free site hosting, no strings attached, and he replies that he doesnt want to not have control of his own site... that pist me off more than the money thing, assuming I wanted COSR... bah to hell with them, dsmtalk and RMDSM is more than enough forum for me... besides... how many forums can *you* read ina 12hr work day? =P
props for having a large userbase... but poor mgmt/ppl skills imo, a must have for running something that big... anyways enough ranting
off to a new thread =P
