Instead of waiting till friday I was able to get the car over to the emissions place saturday. Amazingly enough I passed the visual and the rest of the tests.

Now I'm set for another 2 years :)

How did you prep the car to pass?

I just put back in my stock cat, turn the boost down to 9psi and hide a few "suspicious" vacuum lines and get it tested. Last time it passed pretty easily,I hope it does the same when I head over to the test place in the next couple of weeks.

Just put some 85 octane and richened it up enough to where it wouldn't knock. Turned the boost controller off.

You passed the visual without a cat??

Aaaah. Ok. Well, good deal. :) What kind of numbers did the car make as compared to the limits?

Heres the numbers...

HC 2.0611 Limit: 3.0
CO 18.2560 Limit: 20.0
CO2 342.3669 No limit
NOx 1.3694 limit 6.0

Had anyone ever dataloged emmisions?? That would be kind of funny.

Actually they won't let you. If they see something in the diagnostic port they'll fail you.

Oh.. that would be kinda cool though.

a quick question about this actually.... I have a stock turbo and exhaust on this, my stock cat is on, so I was wondering if it would eventually pass? not sure how many psi the turbo is set at but my guess is 8 psi give or take...

Like Dave says, the lower octane fuels are much easier to fully combust.

The most important part of passing is keeping your cat as hot as possible before they take it onto the rollers.

The oil seals on my 14B are failing and I blow a lot of blue smoke because of it, and I passed with less than half of the limit of everything despite the burning of the super long HC chains that oil is composed of. The guy almost failed my visual inspection because I was reving the car while waiting in line to keep the cat hot and was blowing oil smoke everywhere, but he let me do the sniffer test anyway because it was not busy and I passed no problem.

I would also think that gapping the plugs a little extra would allow better combustion, I mean not overkill but .032" instead of .028" will make a difference and it's not like the 5psi they might get to on the rollers will blow the spark out or anything.

I dumped a couple of bottles of rubbing alcohol into my tank and ran the car hard and went right to the testing station and it nearly passed with out a cat in place and this was with my AFC tuned a little lean and boost was 13psi on my 18g at the time.
I went right home and threw the stock cat in place and easily passed.

My dsmlink was hooked up up while the emissions was done and I passed just fine. They didnt even say anything about it either.

Is using 85 octane a special trick. I would have never thought of that. Is it because 91 has a longer burn? I will be smogging my car in a week or so.

You shouldnt really need to do that unless your car isnt tuned right. I fast passed with out changing a thing on my car except putting my high flow cat in. I took the long way to the emmision place only because they are litteraly 3 minutes from my house.

The emmision guys expected my car to fail, they even got down on the ground with a flashlight to make sure my cat was there. They eyed over my extra o2 sensor that I use to plug my o2 bung.

They told me most of the modified Eclipse they see come through fail right away.

If your fuel trims are good (close to 100%) and your O2 sensor works, then you should be able to pass fine.

I think I'm gonna change my o2 sensor before I take it in then cause the A/F ratio gauge is hooked up to that and is getting crazy readings....

the a/f guage should sweep back and forth rapidly durring low throttle cruise conditions.

mine travels back and forth all the time EXCEPT when I'm REALLY REALLY flooring it then it reads all the way rich

I had to put my stock exhaust back on, then I just tried to get my Fuel trims as close to 100% as possible, then I passed, first time I tried going without a CAT passed visual but failed the actual test, the second time they looked for a cat, and looked over my motor. I think if you fail once, the second time they really look everything over.

I'm going to have to tune my boost down since the gauge marks 14 psi when I floor it.... and I dk if it'll pass. I'm sure looks wise they won't give a crap cause my stock cat is on there. Hopefully I'll pass cause I don't feel like spending money and wasting time changing parts out just for a stupid piece of paper lol

everytime i go the ppl there really enjoy looking at my car. they didnt really even inspect it last time just looked at the turbo :o ....but off course i failed the test TWICE. tonight im going in for the 3rd chance. i changed the spark plugs, wires, and put in some fuel stuff to lean it out a bit. i'm also going to turn the AFC way way down so hopefully i'll pass.
