Has anybody passed without a cat in place?
I went down to a place yesterday and they didn't look under any of the cars they were testing so I figured I'd turn the boost down to 8psi and lean my fuel settings on the AFC and go see what happens.

The only change I did was put the cat in the car and put some crappy gas in. Passed with flying colors.

Ok,just got back from trying to pass and it failed.:(
It passed every thing except the hydrocarbon test and it just missed that one. I guess I'll need the cat,I'll borrow my friend's this weekend and try again on Monday.

Umm they let you run w/o a cat??? Which place was this??
On your sheet it should tell you what a high HC count is from. I can't remember off the top of my head.

They never looked and I never told em.;)
The comments said the high HC readings were from unburned or partially burned fuel. Hmmm,I did turn all my fuel settings down to stock and boost was at 11psi.

What fuel injectors are you running? Also are you running a hacked mas? If so you need to run the car leaner.

I'm still on the stock injectors and my Mas just has the lower honeycomb removed so maybe I'll try leaner and with a cat.
I know it will pass then.
Install the cat, get your fuel trims about 110-120% and you should be able to pass fine. I passed a couple of months ago.

Can I pass on 101 octane since I still have a 1/4 tank left from Friday night?

No you need to use regular pump gas.

Why? Wouldn't 101 burn cleaner and more complete or does it burn too hot?

The higher the octane the slower the burn. Which means it they will fail you because your running rich. I put some 85 octane in and turned the boost all the way down. Also put your afc settings at 0 across the board.

The higher octane fuels *can* result in higher than normal Hc levels... especially if you have a slight misfire.

I heard that a bottle of octane booster helps to pass emissions. Not sure if it's true, but it could be worth checking into. <shrug>

your better of with some cheap gas and some ethanol to cut it.

I think I just need to put in a borrowed cat and pass,it passed fine two years ago with my AFC settings zeroed and on 9psi.

It took me 3 tries to pass emissions. The first time was a no brainer - no cat and failing o2 sensor with no way to lean out my fuel curve. 2nd time I put a cat in and a new o2 sensor - still failed. So I went home disconnected my FP rewire and tightened up my BOV(disconnecting the FP rewire probably would have done it :) and 3rd time I passed by alot.
