View Full Version : Crankwalk victims, yet again, we are

We took our 97 Spyder into Quality to get an alignment and check out the driveline while it's sitting at 57,xxx miles before the warranty is over at 60K. While it's there I asked them to double check the play in the thrust bearing. It was previously fixed back in November for crankwalk including the new style thrust bearing with holes for better oil supply. But now it's already 'walking again, though not as bad as it was when we bought it last year. It'll get fixed under warranty, again, thankfully, since it hasn't been very long since it was last in. So, evidently, the "fixes" that Mitsu has issued for crankwalk repair are still not the answer. Shea and I were discussing it yesterday and we firmly believe that Magnus' theory is the correct one with the oil squirters (or lack thereof) being the culprit. Since we just bought it late last year there is no way that we could either trade it in or sell it and get what we owe on it, so we'll just wait it out and see if it happens again, though I'm sure it will. Fortunately we have a spare 6 bolt in our '91 GSX parts car, so we'll have that rebuilt and waiting for the Spyder to 'walk again. It's really not that big of a deal for us since we have another car to get us around, but it would really suck for those that just have that 2G only.
Oh yeah, fyi, Quality can't do alignments on anything with 18"+ wheels. So we'll have to take it Bear Axle and Frame, who is cheaper anyways.

hrmm... whats the easiest way to check for crankwalk? I've heard that either you get it or you dont, there isnt much that you can do to prevent it... Whats your take?

When we first got the Spyder I noticed that the clutch would lose all pressure when making a tight right/ or left hand turn radius, such as you would do in a culdesac slowly. Fortunately, we had less than 60K miles on it, so warranty has taken care of it. I just called Quality and we are actually getting a brand new short block in there. :) You can check the thrust bearing for play without removing much, though I don't know exactly how to do it. I'll check around for some websites with crankwalk info and get back with ya on those. How many miles does your car have??
BTW, great job at Bandi!

That's pretty crazy... so it's not a matter of driving the car hard, just driving it at all huh? hehe... kinda glad I don't have a 4g63 in my car for that very reason. Well that sucks, but at least they are taking care of you.
And yeah Quinn, very nice times bud!!

Crankwalk can happen to any engine.
Here's more info:
"Crankshaft Thrust Bearing Failure: Causes and Remedies"
http://www.atra-gears.com/crankshaft/
also I believe a number of reocurring crankwalk problems are caused by misalignment of the bearing.

I agree, but the term used for the 420a is "spun" bearing and it usually only happens when the car is low on oil.

I'm sure Max just meant that it can happen to any "4g63" engine.

I would say that you're crankwalk free with that many miles on it. :) Most of 'em start 'walking between 30K-80K miles, modded or stock.

I know a few of you guys are what I call "clutch riders". You know sit at the stop light with your foot on the clutch type person. This will also cause crankwalk. So those of you that do this you might want to change your driving style.

That sucks to hear you guys, but at least it's under warranty. Speaking of that, I saw the Spyder the other day at Quality when I was picking up an oil filter. It sticks out like a sore thumb with the Monsoons on it, I knew it was yours right away.
How long is it going to be in the shop? I figure they would have it in the garage instead of the back of the sale lot...

It's supposed to be done either late today, or early tomorrow.
Not in the garage, huh?? I may have to say something about that.

Dealerships always do that. If they have your car in the garage that means (assuming they are waiting on parts or something)they aren't making money by working on another car in that garage bay.... I had this argument with the dealership that replaced the tranny in my old eclipse. My car sat outside for about three weeks while they waited for parts.

It's not "that" bad :) But Dave is right you definately need to change your driving style with it. It seems a little odd to be in neutral so much but after a couple weeks I even do it company cars....

Heh, yeah I used to do that with my first 5-speed car, the Mustang. One day my friend was riding with me and he asked why the hell I do that and why I shouldn't. Ever since then I don't hold the clutch in at a stop, but I (and Jenni) definately watch it on the Spyder. I remember it was tough trying to get used to not holding it in at a stop, but once you start doing it then it'll just become second nature.
