Well I figured today I'll pull the tranny out and see if the flywheel came loose. Wiggled it around and noticed the dowl pin was moving with it also. Ok I'm thinking well maybe the dowl pin snapped. WRONG....

As I"m taking the flywheel off I'm thinking "wait a minute... these are tight. WTF is going on. I get the flywheel off and discover the crank is sticking out further than it should be. As I grab it the thing moves atleast 1/8" of an inch. Well as it turns out the crank has snapped just before the #1 journal

I'll have some pics posted later today or early tomorrow.

Ouch - that sucks :( I'd be in a world of hurt if my car broke like that. What do you think caused it - HP or the clutch ?

Now that sucks Dave! Damn...

Did you have that crank ground or did they just polish it during the last rebuild?

Max - I've definately noticed the 2900 hasn't slipped at all and its actually holding much better than the 2600 did. So I'm wondering if the shock of launching especially the way I do made it give.

The only thing I'm going to do this month is ship the transmission out and get the new crank prepped. I'm going on vacation on the 26th to get away from work and my car . When I get back I should have a new tranny being shipped to my door.

Vern - AFAIK the crank was polished. Not re-ground/cut.

Sorry to hear that Dave, must of been all that HP. You dont think the engine was out of balance do ya?

Nope the engine wasn't out of balance. I had the whole rotating assembly balanced.

Granted Dave was pushing a lot of horsepower, but I just don't see a crankshaft doing that unless you're pushing around 1,000 hp. Also, I haven't heard of many stock cranks breaking around the 500-700 mark, but Dave does like to be the first. ;) I'd be looking at other areas for the answer.
