View Full Version : It's time 4my eng. modd process. Q.'s
I was wondering if anyone you know has ever tried sleaving their engine? I am considering 9:1 JE or Ross and for boost or nos, that is all open right now. It depends on money issues, really. I am going for a full rebuilt engine just to support any additional mods for bolt on later with it. So I might sacrifice a lil in the realm of power now, just to get maximum flow out of it for more power later. I would think that the bottom end is strong enough that it doesn't need to be sleeved but if it has to be milled to it's limit, what sacrifices do you have in that? only it being remilled in the future? Or is it risking the walls being to thin for top power integrity?
Additionally, I think I'm going with 1mil over valves just because I don't intend to go with large duration cams. 272-272 or even 272-264 MAYBE.
Can anyone tell me the pros and cons to knife edging the crank or not? Or if it is done to my crank, what other things would i consider to augment this if it may alter the rotating mass in the engine?

There aren't really SLEAVES in a 4g63.
There are pistons, rings, and rods. Cylender walls and a cranck balence shafts. etc you know what i am talking about.
Simply decide on a bore size or aka "PUNCH size"and a compression ratio you want.
I would reccomand just .020 over if you cylenders walls are ok.
Anything over that is just asking for problems in the future.
I did je 9:1 .020 bore and eagle rods i port matched my head, and i did the 1mm oversized ferrea valves.
I like the setup thus far soon i get too try it with a bigger turbo so.
The eagle rods are quoted to hold a little over 700 hp and they are half the cost of crower.
I like the je i also think you would because of the added torque on the low end. You being a part time road racer
JE pistons come with there own rings i like these pistons a lot.
I would reccommand going to www.raceeng.com and looking up some of those prices.
I have an accont set up with those guys there really cool and i have ordered like 5 "engine build ups" from them for a different amount people.
Let me know if you are interested in me looking up some prices for you.
I can get anything race engineering makes including
-ross
-JE
-Wisco
-Eagle
-Crower
-Ferrea
-Just about anything to do with a motor.
I can get good prices on a lot of this stuff. i have ordered so much i am in a level 2 price range. :)
So let me know

You won't need to do any sleeving Erik. I have been told by Terry over at Western Engine that they could bore out a 4G63 to .40 over but that was the extent they could go. But, there really is no reason to go that big. If you bore out your block to .20 that will give you some safety room should you need to rebuild later.
Is it already heavily scored? Why do you think it'll need to be bored to it's limit?
As far as knife edging the crank, really the only goal is to reduce the weight of it and make it "slide" through the oil better. Cons, it costs a good chunk of change to have it done right and balancing the engine is MUCH more important. Check out FFWD Performance, Darren balances his cranks well.

Terry has told me..
He just shotpins his cranks.
My dave and hals, i'm assuming hals but mine and daves are all shotpinned..
Also you can do you own balence shaft eliminator kit. All you do is cut the balence shafts, and spin the races.

No sleeves
If it were me,
Ross pistons, only .020 over, go 8.5:1 or maybe 8.7:1 comp
Mitsu rings
Crower rods
I wouldn't mess with oversized valves unless you want to run 10's or better, save your money. If you do anything to the head at all, just a standard rebuild and a light clean up of the bowl area. Maybe do some Crower light springs and retainers though.
If you take the balance shafts out, get everything balanced, obviously.
If you're on a budget, forget knife edging and get the Crower rods over the Eagles or some HKS cams.
You'd probably like these HKS 264/264 cams. Mild yet wild... You'll have to take her for a spin, before I tear her down. :D
BTW - John Shepherd does shortblock rebuilds. Who better?
