Nice choises, can I ask why you decided to go with eagle rods? Also, while you're at it, you might want to replace the front case assy, get the new oil pump and all, not fun when a newly rebuilt engine has to be lubed by a 100k+ mile oil pump...

I take it you have "enough" money :)

'sigh'..... I wish I had enough money

Cool Erik. Have fun putting it together. Can't wait to see it run. Good luck. Let us know if you need a hand.

Thanks all, for your continued thoughts and encouragement. They've been helpful so far. I don't know yet what's harder. Putting it together or deciding on what parts, how much to spend where and what's the best price I can get for it. It's been a lil time consuming so far. .. Oil pump you ask? Wouldn't be a bad idea. However, that is another expense that I wasn't prepared to spend and the one on the car for now is giving me great oil pressure level. (shown by the stock gauge during driving, the needle is 50-75% high) Isn't that a good sign? Also, the reason for Eagle Rods is that I have heard nothing but good things so far on them. It's said that they are very light and has a smooth surface. That too will help with reducing resistance in the rotation. As for pistons. I think that was the hardest choice to make. The street ones are good and the Wiseco's sound like a good value but I went with the tried and true. I probably could have saved ~200bux on the Wiesco's. But the "ceramic" coating on the Ross's are to allow bad gas 91 to run in there on occasion and on other times higher boost. I've also learned that the coating is a "Black Anodized" procedure rather than a Ceramic coating. A neighbor mentioned if it was ceramic it wouldn't be possible the coating would last all but a few hundred miles at the most. So I was going to forgo the idea till I learned from John Shepherd and Dave Landry that this coating has shown no signs of ware. ... I might have to welcome an 'engine swap get together' at my place when the engine is ready. Others are welcome just to drop by and see how it's done. I for one am not the expert, maybe you can come over and just laugh at my struggling at it.

Very cool Erik! Nice pick on the components you selected too. I have no doubt that you will create a monster. :D

Keep us informed as to how it is going.

So what made you finally decide on the 9:1's?

I know that you can get the lifters cheaper.

I was also wondering how much air you intend to flow since you're spending the $$ on the bigger valves.

btw - I assume that you figured out your "scraping" noise? You never called me back so I just figured you did. :)

Yeah, Vern, I figured it out kinda. My theory was that it could of been the grease we put on the axle that we inserted into the hub side. I think that it heated up and melted out, all on the brake assembly. So I gave it a few extra days and it disappeared. So that is what I think it was. If it comes back again, then I'll be concerned. Thanks for the help again, Vern.
You said quote"I know that you can get the lifters cheaper."
Haven't had luck on DSMtalk. Was that where you said it was for cheaper? Or other now? .. I didn't order them yet. Buschur Racing has them for 14bux each. If there is a better deal maybe it would be worth replacing all of them instead of just a few????
You also mentioned...
"..I was also wondering how much air you intend to flow since you're spending the $$ on the bigger valves."
...Why? Do you think that 1mm over valves are an overkill? Even if that's the case I will be ready for a larger turbo if that is ever in my future or not. I will be running bigger injectors and the 1st gen head flows PLENTY for everything else so I figured this is the weakest link for higher flow right now. Any thoughts you care to share??
..
Oh. and 9:1's because they are good. :) :) No seriously. I have heard that a general consensus amongst our fellow Colorado DSMers that the gossip is lower compression will allow you higher boost level capability. That is generally true. However, my 'theory is that often we are forgetting that source of info we are getting that from. We are hearing from everywhere else in the country. AND everyone else is mostly at lower elevation. So we are essentially not even creating the level of compression that we would have at lower elevation. So 9:1 isn't even the case up here. In fact one persons opinion that I typically hold for some value is John Sheppard and he was wondering if I'd be interested in doing a 10.0:1 ratio because of this! I wasn't because this is a daily driver and even up here I'd be likely needing to feed the car 100+ oct. And I don't have that kinda $$ for driving with that all the time. Plus I would more likely have to race with less boost. AND what is our cars infamous trait??? Anyone?... Beuler? - - -

I hope it's a tried and true, and still avail. source. I will look into it.

Cool Erik. I was just wondering what made your mind up. It sounds like you are set.

I kind of understand you comp ratio theory... However, the 9:1 is still 9:1 no matter where you are at. Elevation does not affect the actual mechanical/physical distances within the cylinder that create a 9:1 or an 8.5:1 comp ratio.

Elevation does however affect the Pressure Ratio that your turbo needs to be efficient at up here and the oxygen content of what goes into the 9:1. That fact may lead one to run a higher static comp ratio to avoid having to run a higher pressure ratio. It's a trade-off.

Some of the "fastest" shops are running lower than an 8:1 comp ratio. ;) The more air you can cram into the cylinder the more power you can make; no ifs, ands or buts no matter where you're at.

It is.... the main person handling this just moved on to a new job but he made it quite clear the deal was *NOT* going away anytime soon..... ;)
