I am going to port my 1st gen 4G63 - both exhaust and intake to be port matched with the gaskets respectively. I will have a machine shop do it, I guess they send it out to someone to port it because porting the head requires a flow bench(thanks dave :D).

I wanted to ask u guys if I ended up using cams(.800-.850 lift.. around there..) with my ported head, 18g - would I max out the flow of the head by using the stock valves?

Anything would help,

Canh

You will gain more from upgrading the turbo than you will from head work.

The 18g won't even come close to keeping up with a stock head's flow capacity.

Take the money for the head work and buy a 20g.

Oh yeah... BIG DSM cams are a tad over .4" lift measured at the valve.

I tend to agree with Hal on this one... pure price difference for about $1000 or so you can get a good turbo, selling your old one then ordering a new one (if that is possible with down time) yields even more money to spend on a great turbo, such as one of FP's or AGP's. Remember, good port work isn't cheap, and cheap port work isn't good.

Hey thanks for the info - yeah about those cams i couldn't remember exact number :D That would be a pretty good choice i believe... but my reasoning about porting the head now instead of later. I don't have the resources to pull my head off every other week - with school and work all the time. Well I shouldn't complain I own a DSM =) and DSM requires fair attention.

Thanks for the replies.

Here is the FFWD Stage IV head that arrived today:

Intake side (http://206.124.12.138/codsm/dsc00006.jpg)

Exhaust side with factory gasket (http://206.124.12.138/codsm/dsc00007.jpg)

Exhaust side, no gasket (http://206.124.12.138/codsm/dsc00008.jpg)

1mm over size stainless steel valves (http://206.124.12.138/codsm/dsc00005.jpg)

This head work goes for $1600 (not including the head). I'm glad I didn't pay nearly that much.

FFWD Head work (http://www.ffwdconnection.com/cylinderheads.htm)

You can buy a LOT of "other" go fast goodies for $1600.

BTW... this is actually done by BJ's FFWD just farms it out.

Hey Hal you went serious huh? How did you get a good deal? Do you know those guys out there? FFWD seemed like a great company also...

I got it second hand.

It had been installed but never run, still has the assembly grease on the valve seals and shafts.

Before I install it I will helicoil all of the holes and put all new studs in it.

I have to "trim" the stock exh. gasket and do a little port matching on the exhaust manifold.
