Great site!

I have a suggestion. Have a section where newbie'e (like me) can introduce themselves etc...

I am a sccorpio, I like taking long walks and.... ;)

Seriously my purpose in being here is to lean as much info as I can about these cars so I can determine if I want to buy one for sure. I used to own a 2000 GTP coupe that dynoed 256HP and 327Ft.Lbs to the crank (210HP to the wheels) and I was in a local club (RMCGP). I'm # 20 on the list: http://www.dynopro.com/mhhr_grand-prix.asp That was bone stock and was determined that I had a "factory freak" as I beat another members highly modded GTP (PCM, smaller SC pulley, exhaust and intake), a Mustang GT on the highway and I paced a WS6 Trans Am to about 50MPH (then he started to walk..).

My GTP got demolished and I made a decision to buy something practical (dirt slow in comparison) in it's place, a 2002 5-speed Hyundai Elantra. I also have a beater car, (the one I will rid myself of), a 1990 Probe LX (3.0V6 with a 5-speed). I am either going to buy another GTP, a Mustang GT or an Eclipse/Talon because I miss torque.

Our cars aren't known for torque :) We only have a 4-cyl... and a tiny one at that... but they are known for traction, and good hp numbers... Anything you need to know to help aid you in a purchase of one feel free to ask. There are a great many people on here that know just about all there is to know about DSM's...

A turbo car with no torque? No pleasant sensation of sudden thrust at low/mid RPM's???!!!

Other than the obvious things like leaks, knocks, etc... what are some things I should look out for when buying one. I am looking to by a second generation turbo. All cars have issues, so what are some common problems with these cars?

Thanks for your reply.

That sudden surge is going from an engine that is 8.5:1 Compression ratio and no power to a car that is the same with a LOT of air in the cyl's... it's not high torque you're feeling but going from around 100 tqe and 90hp to about 200 and 200 (stock fly wheel... 210/214 hp/tqe)... We like to call it turbo lag, real neat...

Things to look for would be the general state of the engine, take off the oil cap, the darker it is stained the longer it went w/out oil changes... 2G's tend to tick because the lifters are noisy also... get the VIN and call a dealership up and ask what recalls have been done so far. make sure the body is in good condition, check to see how many miles are on it. drive it, check if it makes boost ok and that the cluch is engaging fine. It should go into gear easy... make sure nothing is missing from under the hood, and check for irregular wear on the tires.
