Okay, so I'm new to the whole DSM tuning thing.... I'm running 8.8:1 compression on a 14b set at 9 lbs of boost. I ran the pocketlogger and in second gear I got 26 counts of knock and 12 degrees of timing... What should I be shooting for, and what is acceptable knock count and timing??

what kind of fuel mods? whats your 02v? whats your egts?
24 counts is a hell of a lot.

ok, uhm, first off 8.8:1? You running Evo pistons?
Now onto the rest...
With a 1G and 7.8:1 pistons you should shoot for around .91v O2's and verify your EGT's don't skyrocket... 950 is a nice place to cap at (celcius that is)
With a 2G and 8.5:1 pistons I personally wouldn't wanna be below .93v or so unless my EGT's were rock solid.
26 counts of knock is outrageous, I'd say you have some problems somewhere, maybe lifter tick. 5 counts is a nice area to shoot for when tuning. Do NOT try to tune for 0 counts, you can achieve it but your car will run like shit.
I am curious what type of setup you have since you mentioned 8.8:1 pistons and a 14b, I think you may have had a typo and meant 7.8:1 on a 1G.
Also, what mods do you have to aid in tuning? Fuel management etc...

So I have no fuel mods yet and no egt yet. The o2 is showing .94volts. It is 8.8:1 compression on a 1g, the friend that I bought it from rebuilt it with NA pistons and put the metal headgasket on it. Really haven't gotten any tuning mods yet, not sure what all I should get for it. I plan on using this for my daily driver since I just bought an AWD Laser to build, but I want this one to be as fast as I can get it without too much worry bout blowin it up. I did hear somewhere that the 1g lifters tend to make alot of noise unless you change them with a newer version or somethin, not exactly sure tho.....
and again, thanx for the help and advice

do you have a boost gauge? 9psi shouldn't be anything to worry about. 1G and early 2G lifters tick like CRAZY, but you can get updated ones that have larger passageways.

On race gas (100 octane+) you can get O2 volts down to .82 and get zero knock and 20+ degrees of timing but on pump gas you definetly want to shoot for .90 but I got good results at .88 with 17psi on my 18g.
These results might not apply to running around town boosting on a hot day tho';my results are from drag runs at the strip.

Apparently the car was rebuilt with 8.8:1 evo pistons or some other make w/ the same CR... it's a 1G though... I would personally shoot for around a .93 and see what the knock count and EGT's are before going leaner. Especially if it's just an around town car.

I know I might sound like a dumbass, but gotta ask to learn.... What is the o2 voltage and is more or less better.... also what should I be shootin for on the egt??

the O2 voltage really is gonna be different for everyone... I've heard some people run really low, some really high, it really matters more on your knock count (which you need to figure out why you're getting 26 counts) and your EGT's... You don't want to be over 900-950 max (Celcius) if you climb there too quickly I would suggest adding some fuel...

Cool.... Should be gettin my egt this week so I'll take a look. Also gonna replace my knock sensor just to be safe.... How likely is it that the lifters could be causing false knock?
