View Full Version : 90 Big Rods With 93 Pistons?

I have a set of "Big Rods" that came out of a 1990 4G63 non-Turbo that I want to mate to a set of 1G pistons that had "small rods" connected. The machine shop says the big rods dont fit the pistons because the big rod is too wide where the wrist pin goes through... in other words the top of the rod is to fat for the piston (however the wrist pins do fit)... I thought 1G rods only needed to be machined to have 2G pistons attached. Am I wrong, or is the machine shop bullshittin me? Is there a possible difference between non-turbo and turbo big rods?

Unh huh. :) I was anyways.

Not right now though, Im waiting on a Fuel Pump, my SX died the other day....

Good to hear from you!
Rob

EDIT: Compared to some of the motors that people on this board run, my motor isnt such a beastie after all!

LMAO, mine had the damn stub replacement that goes in place of the balance shaft back out and come out which caused my oil pump gears to grind the block to a halt, my car needs the front case changed out before it fires again :) But yeah, I suppose you could call it a beast.

Go look at my pictures. The crankshaft looks like a weapon. muahahahaha. Its only a 2.0 though.

I guess this a good time to do a partial mod list.

Extreme DIS filter, GM 3.5" MAS and MAF translator, BR20G, 2.5" IC pipes, Apex Skyline Core FMIC, Greddy Type-S (hate it), Overbored TB (65mm), Mike Hansen Sheet metal intake manifold, FFWD connection Level III head with Webcam dual springs and titanium retainers, Ferrea 1mm oversized, tapered, backcut and swirl polished valves, Ported 2G exhaust manifold (working on getting a DNP), 3" O2 eliminator downpipe, testepipe, ATR 3" exhaust, Unorthodox underdrive pulleys, Unorthodox adjustable cam gears, Webcams race only grind (hate em), knife-edged, shotpeened, doweled crankshaft, Oliver connecting rods, JE pistons with ceramic coated skirts (8.5:1), BS eliminator kit, inside the motor has been coated to help return oil to the pan faster, 12mm ARP headstuds, HKS metal headgasket, BR 4 coil on plug kit, 720cc injectors, BR fuel rail, -8AN fuel system.

As soon as I find some employment, im gonna go with 3" IC pipes with a blow through setup (and a Tial BOV), and a quad throttlebody intake manifold featuring 4 x 50mm throttle bodies. Possibly a FP30 then too.

Can anybody help me with my rod question?

ok, i was clicking in the wrong area for the profile, LOL..

as for the rods.. the machine shop should be able to do it, i dont think this shop knows how to maybee? Go try another shop, my friend was trying to do this to her 1g, and the shop was going to do it for her.

The only differences (besides the crank pin diameter) is the width of the small end of the rods. The 6-bolt rods are .100" wider than the 7-bolt rods. Western Machine can do this as they did my last piston/rod combo. I have a set of 2g pistons mated up to the 6-bolt rods. This is essentially what you're trying to do. I know a lot of people have complained about Western's work and what-not, but until I see a reason to not go back, I'll keep using them as my brother and I have had outstanding work done by them.

BTW: That set of 2g pistons on 1g big rods are still up for sale. Contact me for more details.

Geddes does amazing work in the springs. The only downfall I've found are the wait times.

Rob knows all about that, he's used Geddes before too. :p
